Hardly Davies' fault that Allardyce almost always would only play one striker.bobo the clown wrote:A very good player, but another one 'SKD' failed to establish a partnership with.sluffy wrote:Jared Borgetti.

The odd time they did play together Davies played right hand side!

We also had Matt Jansen for part of that season who, for completely inexplicable reasons, kept getting picked ahead of him.BWFC_Insane wrote:Hardly Davies' fault that Allardyce almost always would only play one striker.bobo the clown wrote:A very good player, but another one 'SKD' failed to establish a partnership with.sluffy wrote:Jared Borgetti.

Signing Jansen as a cheap gamble wasn't a bad idea, but once it became apparent that he'd lost it after his crash, he should have been quietly dropped. No - kept getting picked ahead of Borgetti.
I remember one away game at Portsmouth, watching with head in my hands.
Presumably Allardyce would say that Jansen Put The Graft In, or something.

Ach, to be fair to Allardyce I don't think Borgetti suited how we played at the time all that much. I also think it was tough for him to adapt to English football so late in his career. Bit like Klasnic, a great goalscorer but ask him to do owt else and he struggled. And we definitely needed the forward to be doing something else to make our gameplan work.Puskas wrote:We also had Matt Jansen for part of that season who, for completely inexplicable reasons, kept getting picked ahead of him.BWFC_Insane wrote:Hardly Davies' fault that Allardyce almost always would only play one striker.bobo the clown wrote:A very good player, but another one 'SKD' failed to establish a partnership with.sluffy wrote:Jared Borgetti.

↑↑↑ Then why buy him ?
I wonder who his UK agent was.
My main point was that, despite SKD's obvious strengths he NEVER created a real partnership with anyone.

IIRC he wanted a big name striker all summer but never managed to land one and Borgetti was the fall back option to an extent.bobo the clown wrote:↑↑↑ Then why buy him ?

He landed Anelka the next year.
Agree re Davies EXCEPT for half a season his partnership with Elmander was as good as I've seen here......

Under Coyle?? Has the internet just exploded?
Anyway, Borgetti scored a cracking goal in Turkey, I remember saying at the time we've not had a finisher like that since McGinlay. On balance, a gamble worth taking, just didn't end up quite how we'd wanted.

Yep, under Coyle! He didn't get absolutely everything wrong you know.
There was that, oh and signing Holden. And Birmingham. And a good November. Aaaaand I'm out.

Re: Swansea release David N Gog
Late 2005/06, we played at Spurs with Borgetti up top and Kevin Davies wide right, utterly dominating diminutive Korean left-back Lee Young-Pyo. The We're unlucky to go in 0-0 at half-time.
Soon after half-time, he hoiks off Borgetti for RVT, who goes wide with KD trundling up front. Predictably, KD gets a fifth of f*ck-all out of big Michael Dawson and bigger Tony Gardner while our lads - Speed, Stelios, Campo, Nakata (sub: Okocha), not a dim bulb among 'em - loft it pointlessly forward. The inevitable winner comes from Aaron Lennon, down that right wing we'd owned in the first half.
Managers, eh? That was the game after which Allardyce basically blubbed on camera that he'd love to be England manager, please mister. Pity we'd only won four points from the previous 24 available.

I remember one game against Man City when we played in a way to suit Borgetti by keeping it down and were superb at it. Allardyce soon changed all that.BWFC_Insane wrote: Ach, to be fair to Allardyce I don't think Borgetti suited how we played at the time all that much.

To accommodate Sturridge which can hardly be called a poor option but yes, that upset that particular applecart. Elmander loathed that and no way was he staying the next season.BWFC_Insane wrote:Yep, then he moved Elmander to the right wing and it all went tits up.Lord Kangana wrote:Under Coyle?? All in all I'm glad we saw Sturridge however.

Completely correct. But Davies was King and no-one upset Kevin ... and got away with it.BWFC_Insane wrote:Should have played Elmander up with Sturridge.....bobo the clown wrote:To accommodate Sturridge which can hardly be called a poor option but yes, that upset that particular applecart. Found this when I clicked the link above of Borgetti's goal against City. Some good memories and great finishing here (including the one in Turkey) - enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0WR8AJBR9M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Some nice play too. The old "you know what you get with Bolton" myth blown once again.

I had a fairly good idea most of last season what we were "going to get with Bolton".bobo the clown wrote:Blimey, that was good.
