If carlsberg did transfer threads.....This would be it!

Orlandi is a decent player, but to me it sounded a lot like this time last season when Dougie brought in Garvan, despite that position not being the problem. I suppose you always need cover, though, and someone to bring off the bench.

Apparently, Kamara is back in Belgrade and has signed for Partizan. Any updates on that?

No reports here as yet, that I've seen...Lennon clearly doesn't seem to fancy him playing...so wouldn't surprise me.

Nothing from The Oracle or on SSN's. Would this mean we could make a last minute move for someone, preferably a striker?

False alarm, Partizan officials have just declined those speculations. Anything can happen though, 2 hours and 15 minutes remaining.

Well he's not in Belgrade for nothing.

Maybe I'm being thick, but I have two questions about transfers.

1. Why does the transfer window stay open until the end of tomorrow rather than today? I think I saw the bank holiday being cited as the reason. However, the BBC website shows a number of transfers having gone through today, including several between English clubs (don't think it's a holiday in Scotland today), so the fact it is a holiday doesn't seem to stop transfers happening.

2. We always hear a lot about managers having to sell players before they can buy new ones. I can understand this from a wages point of view - you use the money you paid the old player to pay the new one. What I don't get is why selling the player or waiting to the end of a contract are the only two ways to get rid of a player. If a club wants to get rid of a player, why can't players simply be made redundant? Surely players have got a notice period in their contract? Can't they just be given notice? Are footballers subject to different employment law than the rest of us?

Part 2, the answer is that legally you can't just make someone redundant (footballer or otherwise). You must demonstrate that the job they were doing no longer exists. Most of the contracts are fixed term (other than the odd crock's pay per play type arrangements), so they have a natural expiration date, I guess that removes the notice period (as both parties agreed the fixed term when the Contract signed).

We could probably get shut of Trotter, confident that his job no longer existed...

On part 1, the transfer window can be any period not exceeding 12 weeks (and 4 weeks mid season). The FA decide when the window opens and shuts, I guess they opened a day 12 weeks prior to tomorrow, to try and give folks some chance of a Bank Holiday.

A typical contract for a footballer will be 1, 2 or 3 years. In agreeing that you've set out their end-of-contract date ... viz. their notice.

So you can get rid beforehand, if you pay them up, or at the contracts end (by one party declining to renew). If you gave them a 'normal' 3 month notice they could use that as easily as the club and simply walk out. That would apply as readily to good, valuable players a well as Trotter.

Or, in a very rare case, a player may be sacked for breaking his contact or gross misconduct. That's pretty rarely done.

Transfer window is closed in Serbia, so Kamara set to stay at Macron. We do have one more day to loan him out, at least.
