I hope its not the pressure of the job. But I am fearful its a contributing factor.

First and foremost im a bwfc fan. Im worried about the state of my club and clearly we are missing appropriate direction at the top level. I hope trevor birch can bring that. I am not sure of his history or success but we need to back the guy.

I hope gartside makes a recovery but i am glad he is out of the club - if its harming his health he doesnt need it. There are more important things in life. Hopefully its a fresh start for all.

Just to add my tupporth to the best wishes for Phil Gartside. I met him on a few occasions in the first half of the last decade, and he struck me as a genuine Bolton fan enjoying our ascent. He would be the first to admit that mistakes were made along the way, but he worked well with Allardyce (and Eddie's money) and I remember his puppyish enthusiasm as he completely failed to not tell me about attempts to sign Mido and Edgar Davids, among others. At Chelsea, to help me get into the right part of the ground, he even lent me his tie...

Anyway. We lost touch and I haven't spoken to him in years but I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

Had similar experiences, met him a few times during the premiership years and he was always prepared to speak openly and honestly about the club. Somewhat contrary to his public perception of being secretive. He told me a few interesting things, that can't really be repeated and aren't all that relevant anymore but the point is that whilst he'd be the first to admit there were errors made along the way, the full set of information sometimes puts things in an entirely different light.

There is no doubt he is a fan first and a chairman second and at times you could see the toll the job put on him. I think he's probably done the job too long. The hours required and the stress of it must be absolutely massive. As he said once in conversation it isn't like a job where you go home and relax, the phone constantly rings. And he was the driving force for many things especially once Eddie invested.

I think that once you hear that someone is seriously ill football takes a bit of a back seat in most people's minds. Or at least it should do.
