Re: New Manager Thread
We've no way of knowing, of course, but this feels like a good appointment. I'm looking forward to getting to a few games whenever we are able to.

Nah, he talked about how he re-educated the Barrow fans, pure Douglas! Doesn't sound like he'll be trying to control the game without the ball though so that's good news.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 8:53 pmAll sounds a bit Owen Coyle.
Just hope we can get some players capable of matching the brand.
Delighted he didn't shirk the promotion question. Very positive.
Looking forward to it now. Could be another long wait though.

Very happy. To be fair, only the appointment of Megson left me underwhelmed in the past 20 years but this guy seems to know what he wants and expects from his players and doesn't seem like a guy to cross.
He's got my full backing for the next 2 years. I'll decide on a 3rd depending where we are.

Listen to that. It’s not Owen Coyle that’s for sure. Man has substance. It’s Allardyce but a different style of football. IMHO. At least presentationally. He’s young. I’m sure mistakes will be made. But feels like something we’ve got to stick with. If he goes it means he’s done well here. I hope.

Do we know who he's fetching with him then? What's happening to Dids?

I cant tell you how old I felt when I learned that he only made his league debut in 2001!

Assistant and analyst coming. Talk of physio too but not yet confirmed...probably a case of him working his notice period.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:40 pmDo we know who he's fetching with him then? What's happening to Dids?
As for Lee...no idea...my guess would be he’s shown t’door but guess it’s up to TP and IE.

They still need someone to run the reserves, as they may be called again. Won’t be Phoenix, won’t be Atherton, won’t be the analyst guy.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:45 pmAssistant and analyst coming. On another tip. If League games are still behind closed doors or severely restricted numbers, and we are playing well in pre-season, the club should stream the last friendly and make a big push on selling iFollow subscriptions. I for one might be tempted.
Re: New Manager Thread
Sure I read somewhere (apols, probably care of our intrepid DSB) that he's been promoted out of every division he's played or managed in at least once (except the Prem).
It's probably partly a zombie stat but it shows he's known what it takes to go to several times.
Huge huge responsibility on him, Phoenix and the recruitment/analytics team now. Coaching, tactics mentality etc are of course important, but everything pales in comparison to getting the right players in. If they can get that right I'm excited.

Re: New Manager Thread
I've got to say that this is the first appointment I have had a positive feeling about since Allardyce and before him Rioch. Very different in football philosophy but he appears to be confident in himself and comfortable in his own skin. That marks a huge change to the chancers we have seen far too often as managers. I'm not getting my hopes too high but think he can get us competing again. So much so that I may well be buying a season ticket for the first time since that halfwit Coyle departed.
Re: New Manager Thread
Really excited about the future now. Hope we recruit players similar to the Head Coach - young, hungry and on the way up rather than just the usual crop of middling journey men.

Re: New Manager Thread
Meanwhile, Dean Holden gets his chance - he's now caretaker of Bristol City, who have jogged on Lee Johnson... five games left, they're nine points outside the playoffs so that's unlikely, but a strong finish might see our old boy claim the seat... funny how it goes...

I agree with those who say they'd be happy if we continue to exist in a year, but that we're paying 6 figure compo for a new manager suggests the owners aren't worried about going bust, and surviving as a club can't be a sporting target.
It may need to be quickly re-evaluated but even under embargo and wage cap I still think we'll be a big pull at this level. Top 6 for me seems where we should be setting our sights.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:44 pmI'd hope good football and top half. Play offs in the 2nd season
• Good quotes combining pride and intent (good football, hard work)
• A genuinely threatening signing (eg Eoin Doyle)
• Plenty of intriguing signings
• Sensible comms from club re things like tickets (if there are any)
• A good kit, not that f**king mess we had this season
• Pre-season games display footballing intent
• Keep calm if it doesn't start well
• Team knits together, 10 games unbeaten, top half, playoffs in reach
• Strengthen in January. A big Cup game shows intent?
• Keep run going, get in playoffs?
The Sherpa Van Trophy! We've won it one time!
Re: New Manager Thread
I'm just going to sit quietly, not second guess what the guy is going to do, signings etc. and pray we have found a slightly more, in football style, adventurous version of Sam. The bloke seems okay and for next season at least I shall hold my tongue.

For once we are in agreement. I think he seems a good choice. You never can tell if it will work out or not but all fans seem to have taken to him which is a start. Certainly seems ambitious and with ideas. Give him a decent crack at it.

Re: New Manager Thread
Jimmy Phillips has 'stepped down' from his role as Academy Director. To be honest, I expected this to have happened pretty much immediately after the recategorisation.

Re: New Manager Thread
It got a bit weird with virus I guess. I only recall seeing something fairly recently from the club saying thanks to Those who had turned out for the academy this season - some lads played games as young as 15/16 for the u23s I think! I reckon Phillips has been working a notice since the announcement.
Anyway, I thank him for his work - 30 years is not to be sniffed at. Brought through some good players and also stepped in to manage during several hours of need. Working for the owner before this one can’t have been much fun.

Re: New Manager Thread
Notice that the job role is now Academy Manager rather than Academy Director which I believe was Jimmy Phillips's job. I guess the main change is that Phoenix (as DoF) now has the overall say in the direction of the academy where as this role is the handling of the day to day running of the academy on a much lesser wage I guess.
