The only way is up!!! Down the Southend of things.
Facing facts, we shouldn't even think about not winning this one handsomely..Eleven places below the Whites and as far south as can be right now, the Essex lot "should"
be no problem...should they..??

Re: The only way is up!!! Down the Southend of things.
Their record this season (most recent fixture last) is LLLLLDLDLLLLLLLLWL. The win was in their last away game, at Walsall, who started the game in 12th... a place above where we are now...
But yeah. I don't think anyone could be reasonably accused of hubris for saying this is the sort of game we should be winning - at home to a 24th-placed team with 5 points from this season's 13 league games this season and 5 wins in their 48 league games since summer 2019.
What they might do considering their position is sit very deep, which would ask different questions, but we would just have to keep patiently passing and probing and moving them around. Width might be important if they hold a low block.
They might have three COVID players back but they also have injuries: left-back Tom Clifford pulled out with a back spasm seconds before the midweek loss at home to FGR, which featured young striker Matt Rush, making only the second league start of his career, shooting wide while unmarked 12 yards out. It took FGR more than an hour to score, when two subs combined, perhaps illustrating the greater strength in depth.
if we get an early goal they will fear the worst and might fold like a Southend deckchair. If we don't, and we try to rush, it could get a bit panicky: an away 0-0 half-time is rarely bad news, but a goalless first half at home to the bottom team might not be the best mood. Hopefully we won't know.
Oh and their right back is called Elvis Bwomono.

We should be able to keep the (Dr) feelgood factor going for this game. Famous last words, but this should be a comfortable 2 or 3-nil win.

I’ll take a scrappy win. Can’t see us turning someone over yet - particularly someone who will come happy to defend for a point.

Giving current positions and our run, bragging rights will be an issue for the Shrimpers.A good reason to be clinical and careful. Get ahead early by a couple of goals and stay there. and stay there. ..........A Sherlock moment of course...

Scrappy 1-0 where we couldn't look 'em in the eye because they had three goals disallowed and two stonewall pengy's turned down would do just fine.

Evatt seems to think they’re a high press lot.

Unchanged from midweek. Comley on bench for Miller.

A win today could see us climb to 9th putting those teams in the play-off places under pressure. I reckon teams above us would start looking over their shoulders, especially if we win convincingly today.

Irritating. Assuming it’s injury as he’s our only other forward. Miller seems very injury prone, which is presumably one of the reasons why he is in league two.

Not convinced a silence for maradona is justified at all.

"It's fair to say they're parking two buses" agrees Derek as the footage shows four Southend players hunting down our defenders in our half
At least Henshaw revised his earlier prediction, although not his notion that Southend's Cypriots might not be used to Boltonian weather - as if Lisbon-born Ricardo Santos is loving it

This game is about professionalism. Southend will struggle to press like this all afternoon. Stay professional and concentrated and pick them off. Don’t drop standards at all.
