I've decided he's warranted a couple more games.
Oh? And who gave YOU that decision to make? :-)

Evatt is Streaky McStreak Face. We won just one of our opening eight league games, then won five in eight and, prior to Saturday, it was another one win in eight. So, the win against Orient signals the start of the next winning streak.

I was being tongue in cheek when I posted that, but it's turned out to be true! However, it could mean we start losing again in three games' time. That's when you can sack him, LE. :D

March is really interesting - we won’t get through it without a defeat so how we react will tell us a lot.

Not sure where to put this so I'll put it in here. A very decent read this from DSB's buddy, Chis Flanagan at FFT.

A good 'pause for breath and a recap' kind of piece.

Interesting though that Evatt mentions getting a few quality players in as being central to our turnaround, and Amen to that, but without ever mentioning to change to two CBs, which for my money has been the absolute cornerstone from which we've built the current run.

Yeah - I thought we looked more solid from when we went 4 across the back. Either way, I think I'm of a mind to give him 'til the end of the season now.

Yeah 4 at the back has helped in so many ways. No longer are our lumbering centre halves dragged across the pitch - the space between them is reduced, the space between them and the full backs reduced. We have width higher up the pitch (absolutely critical) and a front 4 that is more able to rotate and switch which harkens back to the system Allardyce favoured with Diouf and Stelios.

Fundamentally 3 at the back is so highly specialised it needs absolutely key components to make it work. Wing backs are the key and in reality need to be more winger than back. They need to threaten the opposition and stretch them as much as our two wide forwards do - otherwise you conceded space and there are always easy outs against you. I don't think we've had a proper wing back all season and that is where we most suffer. But also someone like Santos whilst he brings it out like Matthaus at his peak at times he clearly is better when he's got someone up against him to mark. I'm not sure he's mobile enough or reads the game well enough to be as effective in a 3.

Interesting how Evatt's Barrow were shit with a back four and title-winning with a back three, while we were shit with a back three and... markedly better with a back four.

He'll have learnt from that.

Notice however how wide our 2 Centre Halves play at times, almost like fullbacks. While I do credit the formation switch as being more comfortable to our players, our biggest change impact is not that. In my humble opinion, it is the signing of MJ, who fits in snuggly into CH when our central defenders go wide and carry the ball forward, and who reads the game superbly when covering in front of them.

He's got the Easter games to save his job!
He clearly has learnt and found a way. I didn't think he would and would've got rid, and am happy to admit I was wrong. Obviously been helped by 4 vastly better players coming in and all immediately hitting form too. Imagine being told in October we'd sign Maddison and he'd only be good enough for the bench?
Still not entirely convinced, simply because the players are so much better that we can get away with stuff like crap set pieces and still win. At a higher level he still may be one of those purist managers who gets (and gives himself!) plaudits for losing prettily, but I'm now much more hopeful he's not.

Switching from a 3 to a 4 at least shows he's not wedded to some perfect formula that he thinks will work wherever he goes. As a relatively inexperienced coach he's probably learnt a lot more about himself this season.

Yeah same. I was wrong. Happy to be proven wrong. But like you I'm interested to see how he does IF we move up the ladder because it will require more work on the margins and arguably at some point we'll have game on game far less of the ball than our opponents but still need to find ways to win. This is on the assumption that as we move up the money we have won't be enough to keep up (when has it ever) so we'll have to win games that the opposition dominate the ball in most weeks. And as you say that generally means being good at set pieces and organisation etc....stuff we've not really shone in this season.

But he's earned the right to have a good try here. Fair play. I love being wrong in this instance.

I'd have to disagree to a point there, Harry. He stuck with 3 CBs for far, far too long for my money. The only person who couldn't seem to see that it was an absolute disaster was Evatt.

Along with Salford and Colchester, we've scored the fewest goals from set-pieces (5) in the entire league, and off the top of my head I'd say that each of those will have come from a corner.
Our free kicks have been an utter embarrassment. I'm trying to put that one the other week out of my mind but it's like a turd that won't flush. You know the one? Our lad actually managed to hit the bloke in the middle of the wall square in the bollocks. He couldn't have hit the wall more centrally if he'd got his geometry set out.
So whereas it's great to be on our current run there are areas for vast improvement, the greatest of which, I'd say, is attacking set-pieces, and I see no evidence to suggest that they're even on Evatt's radar.

I really don't buy the narrative that they're an afterthought or we don't practice them or care. Though I do think there's an argument we've tried to be cute.

He often talks in his Friday interview with Iles about how disappointed they are with set pieces and how they're working on them. I think DSB suggested a quote from maybe Santos about how they do them on a Friday suggested they might be an afterthought but I think that's pretty standard practice. You find out who you're marking etc and run through them pre-game. We've also clearly got a lot better defending them.

You can also see from the trendy high line and the short corners we take that those are planned.

It's also part of the strategy to take lots of free kicks short unless they're in shooting range or wide. I would expect there are teams who have gained a goal or two on us on set pieces because they stick everything in the mixer. Our thinking I'm sure is that's outweighed by the benefits of quick ball.

I do think we might over think. I can't remember any of the short corners leading to a chance, and we clearly aren't getting enough out of Santos in the other box, either goals for him or his presence dragging people away. I wonder if the sparse coaching staff is a factor, they're trying not they don't really know what they're doing. Liverpool have a throw ins coach ffs!

Agreed on Dapo's free kick, one of the worst you will ever see. The middle of the middle of the wall. But tbf I think it's also pretty standard that players go off and practice the solo stuff alone. That was just bad execution.
