Gwan our Brommers - some interesting free agents we might consider.

:oyea:

Still some decent players out there - I guess that’s normally for a reason though...$$$.

I’m happy with the squad as it is and hopefully Baka and Amaechi are back before long, but if the right deal can be done there’s little harm in bringing another body in.

For example, I can’t help shake the feeling that having someone like Biamou would have been the exactly the sort of physical presence to help guide at least one of our 40 crosses into the Burton net.
Cracking work as ever, Brommers lad.

I note that Chris Markham follows you on Twitter, so surely it's only a matter of time before you're doing this in a professional capacity. 8)
Cheers :D

I applied for the recruitment analyst role that was advertised by the club a couple of months ago and had an interview with Chris. I didn't get the role but it was fascinating to chat with him and gain an insight behind the scenes.

The impression I left with is that the club is light years ahead of where it was in recent years, and is really pushing to be as innovative and forward thinking as possible (for example developing an app to track player fitness and performance levels https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... d-21188988)

It's definitely an exciting time to be a supporter of the club at this moment in time.

Definitely still players out there. Donny signing Joseph Olowu, a centre-back released this summer by Arsenal, who then had a trial (and played at least one U23 pre-season game) at Yoonited. He’s a 1999 birth so he counts towards the total. If we are to thrive by picking up players funnelled out higher up the hierarchy, then it can’t hurt to have spaces.

It's to early to start a transfer thread for January so I'll post it here - according to Nixon, we're considering making an offer for Anthony Hartigan from AFC Wimbledon.

Hmmm. He's played the most minutes of any Wombles outfielder and has gathered five assists in 10 games (he crossed for their opener against us). Kingston-born and Chessington-raised, he's been at the club for a third of his life (since 14, he's 21, although U21 as far ads the league's concerned).

Not sure why they'd let us have him, or whether he'd hugely want to come.

Aye lots of people on Twitter getting excited that we're going to pay a fee.

No idea who he is, but not sure Nixon's recent record is any better than random chance.

I remember the excitement about Josh Magennis, and the almost dreamlike sense of unreality about Doidge...

Nothing against this lad, or Nicholaldo for mentioning it, or Nixon really. I just can't see why we'd suddenly spend money on this lad, or why he'd want to come, or whether another midfielder is what we need... but we'll see.

(Just noticed two of his assists were in the Sherpa Reserves Trophy, which rubs a little sheen off his 5-in-10.)

Didn't Magennis bag 17 for Hull in this Division, last season? :-)

I can't see us paying a fee for a midfielder - a centre forward on the other hand....

Depends when players Evatt and Markham identify become available. If there is any truth in this story he’d obviously be a 21 year old they see as about to breakthrough. For me the midfield isn’t balanced yet. And I don’t think we possess the players to balance it. Sarce for me offers the best movement and attacking thrust. Sheehan is good on the ball but doesn’t offer much off it and Williams is for me our best player in the role he does and I note the step up yesterday he was the one who still looked as effective as ever.

But we lack what I’d call a real all round midfield player to dominate and put themselves about. Sarce for me is a number 10. Sheehan probably a number 8 but he’s not really all action off the ball and I think at times we struggle in there.

I still think in purely football terms MJ Lee Sheehan is the best 3. I don't dislike Sarc and I think he adds a lot of other things but I'm not sure he's always on the same wavelength as the others. And tbf I don't think he's getting dropped any time soon.

Wouldn't surprise me if we paid money for a midfielder, I think they'll have half an eye on resale, which is fine and I think where we (and everyone else tbf outside your Sunderlands) need to be. If they think he's a gem, sure.

I'm still sticking with Nixon being about as accurate as random chance at this point.

Sarce for me offers the best movement of the three. He opens up space. But technically he's not as good as the other two. On the other hand we need his workrate and running and directness.

The one I'd question in certain games is Sheehan as whilst he's nice on the ball I'm not convinced he offers enough in terms of being busy, getting round the park. When he has a little space he's superb but when its tight for me he struggles a bit.

If you an analogy - Sarce = Nolan or Vela
MJ = Campo or Warhurst
Sheehan = Mark Davies or Tony Kelly

What we don't have for me is a Stuart Holden or a Gary Speed - that's the hole - an all round midfield player who can be busy and fill the gaps but also get on the ball a bit. Lee is the closest we've got but tends to end up doing a the long running midfield job rather than occupy and be busy. And I'd like to see a player in that vein join us. It was noticeable that IE was pretty frustrated at Sheehan second half and I suspect teams like Rotherham will nullify him with their physicality and solidity unless he has a lot of movement to pick out.

Given Gethin's leg-snap, and given I've been working today, I took the liberty of researching potential freebie right-backs, using Transfermarkt’s search option. It's not exactly rich pickings.

ANDRE WISDOM has no third-tier experience, the Leeds-born 28-year-old having started at Liverpool before switching to Derby in 2017 (he’s now 28). He trained with the Rams over summer but didn’t re-sign, despite “talks”. Asking too much? Perhaps. But we’ve done short-term deals before.

NIALL MASON, a 24-year-old who has 117 games at third-tier level for Donny and Peterborough after a youth-academy journey including Real Madrid, Southampton, Villa and Blackburn, sounds like just the ticket – especially as he’s also played centre-back, left-back, defensive midfield and both flanks. Trouble is, in January 2019 he pleaded guilty to sexual assault. Donny sacked him but it didn’t stop Posh taking him on, releasing him this summer after 57 third-tier games in two seasons. Dundee had him on trial this summer and passed on him after a fan backlash (hundreds signing an open letter, etc). I don’t think Sharon and Ian would be too excited about those optics.

JOSH CLARKE: A right-back or right-winger, the 5ft 8in Londoner – now 27 – came through Brentford’s youth system just as the Moneyball business was starting, but they kept him on until the age of 25, loaning him to various southern clubs, although only Burton (2018-19) were as high as League One. In Sep 2020 Wigan gave him a one-month contract but not for the first time he suffered an hamstring injury and was cast aside, next seen this summer as a trials at Orient.

Then there’s some older fellas.

SHAUN CUMMINGS is a right-back or right wingback, a six-footer – but 32 years old and hasn’t played since 2019. A Chelsea academy graduate – they say in London you’re never more than six feet from one – he’s played 83 Champo games (Reading and Millwall) and 80 third-tier (McDons, Millwall, Rotherham. Donny).

BILLY JONES. Now 34, the former PNE and Sunderland defender went on loan in January from Rotherham to his first club Crewe, but sustained a serious knee injury and returned for rehab. Versatile - can also play left-back, centre-back or midfield - but that knee would need a stringent check.

PAUL CADDIS (33, 5ft 7in) is versatile and knows the area - he’s played for Bury, Blackburn and Bradford. Having started at Celtic, he later made 150 second-tier appearances and 118 third-tier, most recently at Swindon, who let him go this summer.

Can’t see any of them signing unfortunately. Gethin has a fracture which I think I’ve seen at 6-8 weeks, so end of November.

Adam Seniors on one of those work experience loans as well - seems far fetched to think he might be in the thinking but it’s a limited pool.

Try Kachunga at RB. Seriously. He seems a good solid citizen. Experienced. Not doing it in the front three but seems a robust sort. Worked for Henrik and Ricardo. Might be a disaster but worth a try. Better than disrupting other areas. If it doesn’t work we can reassess.

That would be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen happen. It would be the club saying we’d quite like to go down please. Surely this is absolute garbage?

Certainly a bolt out of the blue but Stockport are chucking a lot of money at trying to get back to the football league and have recent form for this sort of signing. County paid fees for Fleetwood’s Paddy Madden in March and Barrow’s Scott Quigley in July to bolster their attacking lineup. The fee involved for Madden was rumoured to be £250k and it’s not hard to imagine Quigley’s fee being similar.

Sarcevic is out of contract at the end of the season and turns 30 in March. As much as he’s been a key performer for us this year, I’m not sure he’s the type of player you build a promotion winning side around. Having said that it does seem a bit of gamble to sell him considering how poor we look without him.

Is it a case of short term pain for long term gain if we can reinvest some of the transfer fee in a younger prospect?

Nixon has qualified his gnomic murmurings to it being live at Stockport's end. A bit like us being interested in signing Trent Alexander-Arnold
