Edwards off at HT, hopefully always part of the plan rather than a recurrence, bless him
It was as planned:

“…the 25 year old completed 45 minutes as planned…”

Put this in here to avoid starting a new thread. My next door but one neighbour has had
two young lads accepted by the Whites. He's chuffed to xxxx they are training under Stellios. :D

Is Stelios on the staff then? Must have missed that appointment.

Apparently our reserves beat Huddersfield's U19s 3-4 this afternoon. Didn't see an announcement that this was happening, but Delfouneso got a goal, and someone called Danny Jones got two.

Edit: Can't find any mention of a Danny Jones on the official site. We really need to do a better job with the website, in my opinion.

The reserves are finally playing!

Gethin Jones starts, indicating he won't be involved with the first team tonight.

Geth and Senior. Suddenly we've got right-backs falling out of cupboards.

Reserves play at Rochdale (behind closed doors) in the Stiffs Cup, today at 1pm.
First-teamers without recent minutes include Dixon, Senior, Aimson, Baptiste, Gordon, Tomo, Darcy and Delf, while it might help Bod to get 20 minutes in his legs.

Also interesting to see if they line up with a back three.

Went with a young team - only Delf and Darcy with any real 1st-team experience.

Bit of a reality check for the ‘give the yoof a chance’ brigade.

Hird Out!

As the Twitter account notes, Rochdale had seven professionals in their XI. (It finished 5-0.)

Even given where our first XI was before FV I’ve never seen smaller or younger looking reserves than the lads we’ve had on the bench during this injury crisis. Forward line / attacking mids look healthy but we need some young defenders I think. Hope Senior works out.

I feel the academy is really suffering from years of neglect - the current crop look a million miles away from the first team. Hopefully we start to see improvement over the coming years, seems the likes of Rochdale and Accrington have far better setups than us at the minute.

It's another reason why I'd like us, if possible, to pick up some (older) kids discarded from local Big Academies. They'd have more chance of threatening the first team, which creates a positive feedback loop (kids and parents see a pathway). Obviously it's not quite that simple but there's a whole heap of work to be done to fix what you rightly call years of neglect.

There are definite positives around the club, such as the physical proximity of the first team at Lostock and Evatt's much-mentioned habit of "borrowing" the better youth players in training. It all helps, and help is needed.

Interesting quotes from Evatt here.
https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/1 ... pair-loan/
It was a real difficult one [the decision to send Ronan Darcy on loan to Queen's Park]. He needed to go out and play regular football, as did Adam Senior. I keep talking about the gap between the Under-18s and the first team. It is too big, and we almost need an Under-23s team but we don’t have one at the moment.

We felt it best that Adam and Ronan go out and play regular first team football against men and further their development, so then we can make a call on what we do with them in the summer.

Obviously, we have signed a lot of players in Nathan’s [Delf's] position, so we felt it best that he go and play regular football and try and earn himself a contract for next season. He has six months left of his contract here and after that, he’ll need to impress to get something somewhere else. That’s just football. Obviously he has been a big part of what we have done here so far, and he was great last year. We wish him well, and we just move on.

[Amaechi] He’s back training. He will play in the reserves on Thursday, as will a few of them because they need games, but it’s great that we can have that headache again. It’s going to get harder and harder but that’s the way we want it.

We are rebuilding a club from the ground up. Getting a proper U23s up and running will be a start. I'll look forward to the first signings being made for the same.

Costs money, though. You need to take on additional staff and pay them well to get good people.

What a fantastic sign of long term stability it will be when it happens.

Anyone know the younger players' positions? Wondering why Liam Gordon's at four. Outside centre-back?
