Worth mentioning that we've signed academy cast-offs in the not too distant past when we had an under-23 side.

A few names I can remember off the top of my head:

Sam Lavelle
Signed after being released by Blackburn in 2016. (He may actually have been signed for our first team but never actually played due to registration issues resulting from our transfer embargo so ended up playing for our under-23s).

Now at Charlton after spending 4 years as first choice CB for Morecambe.

Joe Pritchard
Picked up by us after being released by Tottenham in 2018 aged 21. Made a few first team appearances before joining Accrington in the summer of 2019. Now a regular starter at Stanley.

Stephen Duke-McKenna
Released by Everton at 17 in 2018. Signed for QPR a year later. Currently on loan at Torquay.

Chiori Johnson
Signed at the same time as Pritchard and Duke-McKenna in 2018 aged 20 after being released by Arsenal. Now at Torquay where he's made 22 National League appearances this season.

It's a known issue in the game that good players slip through the cracks and end up in the nothing leagues or out of the game. Plenty of them graft their way out of non-league and make okay careers for themselves. If we feel like we can sift through the dross to find a couple of those every so often, whilst offering a path to our own academy kids and fitness to our first teamers, it's worth a relatively small outlay.

I'm all for it. Just tempering how much we might chuck at it. :-) I'm sure talent at most sports slips through cracks (or chasms due to the size of the task), with Vardy being one such prime example...Different spin of the coin and no one would have heard of Wagatha. Scouts have much to answer for :-)

Vardy is one good example. Leighton Baines is another. Both came very close to dropping out of the game.

I'm not expecting us to pick up a load of future England internationals and I view the B Team as very much plan....er....B. We'd rather have a proper academy rating and a full U23s set up, but this is cheaper. It's a stepping stone, but I think our scouts are good and they may find us a decent player or two.

Will be a point of genuine interest next season and I'll go to some B games.

I've missed cold, rainy evenings in Leyland.

Final reserve game of the season has just kicked off. A couple of trialists starting - looking at potential B team recruits already maybe?

Possibly, might as well, but throughout the season Central League games often have trialists.

Certainly we have a long way to go to fill an 18-manboy squad.

Could be youth players whose clubs have allowed them to go on trial early. I've not read the Central League rules, but used to be a thing.

Great second touch. First one not so good, but we'll take it overall :D

As I've said, with 18 places to fill in a B squad which is supposed to be a pathway for our youngsters, you would expect most of the first-year pros to be retained.

Details from the gaffer about the B Team in today's Bolton News.

Genuinely so, yes. 3-4 "catching the eye" is good return from a trial day. It's interesting that Iles named specific clubs too.

I think we were expecting this to happen, but I didn't expect it this early.

Yeah that was a nice thing to read this morning. We need one of these super ‘irk’ bods to give us some details on names.

I've been thinking about the redevelopment of the development system recently.

I do wonder if we might be able to attract Mark Allen.

He's an A licenced coach, he ran City's academy for 7 years and oversaw their transition to an elite development set up. He then moved on to try being director of football (Rangers and Swansea), but that hasn't worked for him. He was moved down to academy director at Swansea but then finally sacked, apparently due to Swansea's bigwigs refusing to redevelop the pathway from academy to first team.

Given how open we seem to be to solutions and how much Allen wants the freedom to operate the academy as he sees fit, it might oddly be a great fit at this moment. I could see him fancying a project back in the North West.

Ordinarily he'd be seen as way out of reach, but I think there's an opportunity there given that we are looking to separate the budgets of the first and B team and completely rework the academy structure.

We have the infrastructure in place to run a top level academy over time and Allen has shown in the past that he can be patient with restructuring so long as he knows that the end goal matches his vision.

We'd not need to make another appointment in that role for 10 years.

The article is behind a payroll and I'm not a subscriber so can't be certain, however it seems Andrew Tutte has been offered a coaching role with the B Team.

I expect we probably intend him to play as a support player as well.

Player-coach, yeah. Also looks like Sam Hird will interview for the Barrow job. Baps has turned down our offer of a similar role to Tutte.

Good luck to Sam Hird. That could (could) free up a key backroom position - Hird is/was First Team Coach as well as ‘managing’ the reserves. I’m not sure how we square the circle of the First Team Coach managing what will be a separate squad. But even if Tutte stays, it seems to me we have the space to bring in a fresh voice.
