Aimson should be ahead of Baps based on what we have to say is very limited evidence tonight…
I suspect he already was and it was more of a fitness concern in terms of why Baptiste was ahead of him.

4-1 victory. Lovely stuff.

First half he was great. Second half not so sure, I suspect that was due to the fact that our attack stepped up and he saw less of the ball.

Quick quiz question.....

Is this, the Jarell Quansah goal, the first time we've had a player score for us with a name beginning with Q?

(we've never had a player with a last name Q or U play for us, Matthew Upson had scored an own goal to ensure that we've had a player beginning with U score for us)
Well, don't think Quaresma scored against us....here endeth my Q list

Port Vale 1-0 Rochdale.

Which ensures Liverpool U21's all but knocked out of this competition.

Next match up is Rochdale vs Bolton at Spotland. Given they were relegated whilst we got promoted it would be a nice time to play a mixture of first team and youth players in what is mostly a dead rubber.

Mostly but not quite a dead rubber. If Vale put four past Liverpool (like us and Dale did) and we lose to Dale, it could get hairy for us.

I agree that the next XI might have to be a bit more mixed. It's on Tue 9 Nov, the midweek after the FA Cup first round, in which I'd like to see a full team please Ian, even if the odds are we'll be playing someone from a division below us (79 potential opponents, 23 from our division). The following Saturday we host Crewe, currently third-bottom, so it could be a week for squad rotation.

Is it GD to determine places? I mean we go to Rochdale and don’t lose and that’ll do.

Aye, 7pts out of 9 is usually enough to be in the top half of the group :D

Aye, it's points then GD, then goals scored, then number of (normal time) wins, then record v each other in the group game, then the drawing of lots.

It would be nice to stuff Rochdale if I’m honest.

Thought that was a solid enough performance. Liverpool were well-drilled and pressed high, and their centre back (no, not the Boltonian, t'other one) looked pretty good to me. They caused us a few problems in the 1st half which we repelled well enough without really getting out of 2nd gear.

We stepped it up in the 2nd half to put the game to bed, and deserved the win without needing to put hearts and souls into it. Thought, like others, that Aimson had a very good game. Thomason was better in the 2nd half, his energy seeming more focused than the headless-chicken impersonation in the 1st 45. Credit to Henry and Pettifer too - the former looks pacy and fearless (there was one moment toward the end where he chased a Liverpool player nearly twice his height into the corner and won a throw in. Good little terrier), and the latter looked bright on the ball.

Finish the job properly against Rochdale, and let's look forward to the next round.

I know Liverpool got dunked at Rochdale but haven’t a lot of U21 sides done well in this? Not sure you could say an U21 side is not a favourite.
No, frankly. :D

I wrote a piece on it for FFT – https://www.garyparkinsonmedia.com/all- ... hem-win-it – but it's a couple of seasons ago so I've just updated the numbers, out of genuine interest.

This is the sixth season that Big Club Kids have been allowed in. In each of the previous five seasons, 16 teams have entered – so that’s 80 attempts (before this season).

Of those 80 Big Club Kids teams, 49 have gone out in the groups, and another 19 in the first knockout round (the last 32). Of the 12 (out of 80) who jumped those first two hurdles, 8 fell at the next (the last 16).

Of the 4 (out of 80) who made it as far as the quarter-finals, 3 went out then. Only Chelsea, in 2017/18, made it as far as the semis – and a side including Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah lost to a Lincoln side built around a fat balding 33-year-old called Matt Rhead.

There is, I grant you, a slight trend on that chart above that more of them are clearing the groups year-on-year, but it's still less than half. (We could also speculate that growing numbers of lower-league clubs aren't exactly taking it seriously, and I can understand why.) However, if that's to continue, they'll need to buck up on this season's showing - right now, of the 16 Big Club Kids teams, 12 are going out.

There's always that possibility that we could end up getting beat by Rochdale. I suppose that is whats going to make the game interesting at least. It would've been nice had Rochdale beat Port Vale so we could rotate the squad significantly but it doesn't look like that's going to be the case.

I'd expect a similar strength line up to tonight with maybe one or two changes. Wouldn't change the level of quality in the squad too much, its nice to see us keep winning.

I detest them being in this. From, I think, the first year the under 23s were in where a 26 year old Frenchman scored a hattrick for Norwich under 21s, to them scheduling this round of games during an international break where all the good U21s will be away anyway.

I hate that they treat this competition as a proving ground floor the player-hoarding rich teams, and I hate almost as much again that they can't even do it right.

But I read DSB'S original article and take heart that none of them have come close to winning it. So it pisses me off for now, but I want a Wembley trip and I'd love us to win it.

A decent game. While no one really stood out as the team generally played well, I was quietly impressed by Gordon. Defended, attacked and positioned really well. Improving.
