Pompey and Circumstances...V. Portsmouth away Sat 30th Oct 3.O'clock

Circumstances being what they are right now, can we win the day? As ever, twill not be easy. Not at our best right now for several reasons; players injured and the captain's jumped overboard. Bur we're the one and only Wanderers, so.... onward and upward. :oyea:

Not absolutely sure, but I think I was at our last win against Portsmouth. I do remember it was at the Bok and the one I mean we were leading 3-0, then Andrew Cole came on for them and scored two. Gave us a nervous last ten minutes but we won 3-2.

Think you're getting a bit muxed ip there, Tango. Cole only played for Pompey during 06/07; we won 1-0 down there in September - think it was the night the Allardyce Panorama was on, and CAPS LOCK changed to mixed case. We did beat them 3-2 up here but Cole played from the start and they went in front through Matt Taylor (aye) on 2 minutes; we went 3-1 up through Faye (30), Campo (40) and Anelka (62) before Cole, to use the stock phrase, "halved the arrears" in the last minute.

Since then:
07/08 lost 3-1 away and lost 1-0 at home
08/09 won 2-1 at home (Dec 20th) but lost 1-0 away
09/10 won 3-2 away, drew 2-2 at home;
season before last, lost both games 0-1.

Portsmouth was just after panorama. The panorama night we were at Walsall - Anelkas first goal for the club. And ‘Walker prefers carpets’.

Yes, this is all true. Pano went out on Tue 19, Pompey was on Sky the following Monday

Panorama hatchet job - cheers for the trip down memory lane!

Bakayoko out, Johnston fit, Doyle should have recovered from an illness. No mention of any other injuries.

Much like my hair these days, we are looking very thin up top.

We could get into some real difficulties as the fixture density takes its toll.

Few updates on the injury front (source bwfc.co.uk)

Bakayoko missing due to ankle injury
Doyle expected to shrug off illness
Johnston given all clear after knee injury
Jones seeing specialist

Not sure what to make of these given the recent troubles. I'd like to hope the club are being honest with us about player injuries and preventions but the Sarcevic fiasco has left me doubting what is being said.

Either way, no Doyle or Bakayoko must mean Kachunga or Delf up front surely.

Isn't that saying Doyle's expected to be OK?

Aye, you're right, I'm losing track of time D.S.B. That's the game I meant and Cole had a goal and an assist. Seems just like yesterday.

Think I'd be tempted to start with Delf on the right and Isgrove behind him as full back again.

Their gaffers under a bit of pressure. We're due a decent performance after barely turning up for the last 270 minutes.

1-1 draw.

If we were playing 4 at the back I’d bring Brockbank back in…protect the point away first and foremost. Would also be tempted to bring Aimson in given he sounded like he made a difference last Saturday - could play 3 at the back as well. Thomason for Sheehan?

I’d the aim is to be solid then I’d not put Brockbank in. I’d have Baps in. Yes he won’t bomb on but will do a job.

Personally I’d stick with Isgrove there. He’s the only one capable of doing the FB job Evatt demands.

I do fear Isgrove may come undone against a good winger (or a targeted tactic) - he has the energy and diligence to get back but is really not a defender. That said, our other options are limited too, and as you say Evatt's system demands full-backs/wingbacks that can get forward. We saw last season how limited we get when we don't have penetration down one side.

Put it this way - if I were after a 0-0 I might go for Baptiste, although he looked a busted flush at Plymouth, splashing about in slipstreams. But I don't think Evatt is after 0-0s, and it's not like we have a rock-solid "defensive" right-back - say an Andy Taylor compared to Antoneeee Robinson. It's not a zero-sum game but IMO if we use full-backs that offer nothing going forward, we're far more likely to score 0 without being similarly more likely to concede 0.

It is, though, possible we'll get another hiding at some point. And that's not hysteria, I was saying that back when we were in the top six - it's just the way of things with Evatt. And I'm OK with that for now.

I certainly think we can win tomorrow, and it wouldn't really surprise me if we bag another four - not only do we have that capability when we're ahead (especially as teams opponents late on), but Pompey have a recent collapsing habit. In the last fortnight they've lost 4-1 at Rotherham (levelling just after HT then conceding three goals in seven minutes around the hour mark) and 4-0 at home to Ipswich (conceding on 41, 54, 58 and 75 minutes), also drawing 2-2 at Accy (going 1-0 up to 2-1 down before a late equaliser).

So it's not Operation Certain Defeat, by a long chalk.

I know they're not on the best of form, but Portsmouth are a dangerous side with how intensely they press and the individual attacking talents they possess, such as right winger Marcus Harness (5 gals, 1 assist this season) and left winger Ronan Curtis (3 goals, 1 assist).

I fear this could be another embarrassing defeat similar to Wigan if we aren't on the ball (figuratively speaking) from minute one.

RB is obviously the problem area, but can't really see anyone other than Isgrove able to fill in there. Brockbank is completely bereft of confidence and Baptiste up against Portsmouth's wingers could very quickly turn into a horror show

Baptiste was as bad as I've seen him against Plymouth and I'd not want to see him at right back. His marking for their first goal, from the corner, was literally pub level football.

Playing Izzy there will necessitate Kachunga playing wide right, as I think the only other player in the squad capable of properly covering Izzy at fullback is Izzy himself.

When you look at it it starts to look like you then need to put out the same 11 that was so abysmal for an hour against Gillingham - unless we are aiming to cure our ills by playing Dapo at 10 and Delf on the left.

Kachunga looks a lot more dangerous off the left than he does on the right, but then you have Delf covering Izzy's runs from fullback and that looks dodgy.

Aimson did well when he came on, but then there's a strong argument for playing Johnston and Santos together as much as possible if that's the long term partnership.

One of the more interesting team selections this season, for me.
