It sounds like a good idea, but, they'd set it at way above anything we can currently afford. I suspect all Clubs would want it set at their affordable (or as we've often seen, unaffordable) limit. No way are the "big Clubs" going to let it happen.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 10:36 amWe certainly won more cups when there was a maximum wage.
Even in the halcyon days when there was a maximum wage, I doubt every player was on it - to TDs other point...

In the modern era of vast sponsorship deals the big clubs already find ways around league finance rules with fake deals. It'd be the same for wages, unfortunately.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 10:51 amIt sounds like a good idea, but, they'd set it at way above anything we can currently afford. Any wage cap will be tied to turnover to protect the big boys. And would kill football. It already is half way there given the turnover and wage restrictions already in place across EFL. If some rich mad bastard wants to take his boyhood club to the champions league he should be allowed to. Otherwise football really has lost any sense of a dream.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 10:36 amWe certainly won more cups when there was a maximum wage.

For clarity, I'm not suggesting we go back to a wage cap any more than I'm suggesting we go back to everyone leaving school at 15.

Bod back in full training today.
Izzy eyeing up next Tuesday's Tranmere game.
Evatt telling Sheehan to wait a while - he's fine on the ball but not yet up to speed on his off-ball duties.

I suspect Sheehan will end up getting some game time late in matches but I suspect that they're just letting him take it easy to avoid aggravating any issues further.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Sep 12, 2022 10:26 amBod back in full training today.

Re: Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Bare Bones....
Here's a very nice surprise - Evatt says George Thomason might be back by March.
“George Thomason has had good news, we are probably looking at four to five weeks with him. He is progressing well. Once they took the brace off, it was kind of operation or no operation? How is it settling? Is the knee stable? All of those things were a yes, so he doesn’t need surgery. The knee is looking very stable, it is healing really well so it will be the shorter end of the timescale and not the further two or three months that we initially thought. I would think by early March he will be back in.”
Also explained why Gethin missed the midweeker - he got in the way of our new hotshot.....
"Gethin took a bit of a bang from one of Dan Nlundulu’s shots on Monday in training, so he has got a bit of bruising on his knee. It is nothing structural or serious, it is just literally a bit of swelling and bruising. We are waiting for it to settle down, so he is probably going to miss Saturday again."

Good news - he’s certainly been missed, would have played instead of Sheehan for example.

Yeah, I would say so, and that would hugely surprise a time-travelling me of 12 or 18 months ago. (Time-travelling me needs a hobby.)officer_dibble wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 5:44 pmGood news - he’s certainly been missed, would have played instead of Sheehan for example.
Obviously he's far from the finished article but at his best this season he has displayed the physical side - not just the tackling but the workrate. Similar improvement on that side has made Morley much more of an Evatt player; neither young man was ever really in doubt for his passing ability.

Re: Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Bare Bones....
Delighted to hear he's doing well.
I think I said in Evatt's first season that Thomason can be whatever his technical ability lets him be. He sees the game beautifully and works his arse off, with him it's all about his ability to actually make it happen with his feet. In that League Two season he was trying passes nobody else in the team saw, but he wasn't executing the technique properly. He was seeing runners and going to track them, but being out-thought by more experienced pros.
He's getting more streetwise rapidly and his technique is definitely improving. As DSB says, there's a long way to go; but he's hitting every target you'd set a lower leagues kid of his age. Even if he comes to an almost complete halt now he'll be a League One player, but he will believe he can develop and play up a level.

He can pass a ball too - just short on the which pass / when decision I think.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 6:27 pmYeah, I would say so, and that would hugely surprise a time-travelling me of 12 or 18 months ago. Re: Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Bare Bones....
You can’t worry too much about the summer. I mean we need planning and plans in place but there are many variables.
The key is to maximise the chances we have now. This season.
As I keep saying football is a series of fleeting moments and opportunities. Take the one in front of you rather than worrying about leaving it for another day. Otherwise things tend to come back round and bite you.
So any decisions for me are about this window and the second half of the season. Not the summer. If we were 12th then it’s a bit different. We are 5th and in a semi final. We need to make sure we have a better team to finish this season off. That’s the priority. Loans and what comes next has to wait for me.

What comes in summer will come in summer. I doubt they're huddled in Evatt's office ignoring tomorrow for the sake of something in maybe June. But it's absolutely right that they need to think more than one window ahead. I'd be pi$$Ed if they didn't...

The focus will be on how we give Evatt best tools we can to try and go up this season, but it will be in light of the long term goal of transitioning into a Championship-quality side. We won't rob Peter to pay Paul in the hope we catch "a moment."

For the record, anyone know what precisely is up with the Williamses? I make that eight enforced absences today (7 inj, 1 sus)
