In other news, Billy Crellin has signed for Everton. Not sure what the thinking is there from Everton's point of view as they've signed 3 goalkeepers, Begovic, Lonergan and Crellin since the start of this season.
Maybe Lampard wants to have a reputation for producing English players as Crellin's been in the England youth squads.

Evatt: "...we recruited heavily in January - and this summer we won’t have so much to do. There are still bits and pieces where we need to maintain our forward thinking and add in some strength in depth not nearly as much as there has been.”
Plus much (much) more about the necessity of overhauls in previous windows. eg “For me, the first 12, 13, 14 players at the start of the season were capable, but once we started getting injuries, the drop-off was huge and that was the effect of the salary cap last season."

Wonder if those comments are made on the basis that we're expected to remain in league one this season. I'm sure recruitment would be needed if we were to get promotion, even if it didn't involve a massive overhaul.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 10:15 amhttps://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/1 ... ent-plans/

Evatt doesn't say but Ilesy's intro says "...regardless of what division they play in next season. Ian Evatt is working on two separate plans for recruitment with a chase for a play-off spot still considered a viable target."Mar wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 10:47 amWonder if those comments are made on the basis that we're expected to remain in league one this season. Well I watched Boro last night, and now Luton tonight and you can see the step up in quality again. I’m not sure how many players we have who would be up to Championship to be honest. Having said that Gethin Jones would be an excellent role model to some - hard work takes you places.

Some pleasing but also worrying analysis from Liam Henshaw.
Obviously not a surprise but clear that Fossey belongs at a much higher level. Suggests there will be a huge scramble to sign him from the level above. God I hope we can keep him.

And that’s no disrespect to anyone else. But Fossey has attributes that you can’t build or improve. Raw physical attributes that are essential as you move up.

Considering the players we've nicked from other teams, we'll just have to suck the lemon if Foss goes. If he goes then I suspect we rethink the system. Take him out and I don’t think 3 at the back is nearly as effective.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:49 pmConsidering the players we've nicked from other teams, we'll just have to suck the lemon if Foss goes. Re: State of the Squad 2 - This Time it's Personnel
There are other wingbacks - the lad Kane Wilson at FGR is very highly-rated, and last time I checked still out of contract in summer. It's possible Foz's success may have somewhat cooled any ardour we may have, but I note Evatt made a caveat, in his No Big Summer Plans bit, mentioning "bits and pieces where we need to maintain our forward thinking and add in some strength in depth". I'd say a promising freebie like Wilson would tick both those boxes - resale value and depth - but we'll see.
There's also other players who fit this system better that are still contracted to us next term. John and Johnston are two examples.

The system works because Fossey is so direct, quick and always wants to attack the outside and get the ball in. And he has the physical attributes to do that time and time again. And at real genuine pace.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 6:08 pmThere are other wingbacks - the lad Kane Wilson at FGR is very highly-rated, and last time I checked still out of contract in summer. If we can find another with that then fine. But a wing back who turns round and slows the play down will not balance this system out for us. And I fear finding a Fossey is a once in a lifetime style event.
For 90% of that role is going forwards. So I’m not convinced a right back even translates into it.
Just my opinion but I think without him I’d seriously rethink it.

Re: State of the Squad 2 - This Time it's Personnel
Here's a question for you all. Would this summer be the ideal time to sell Dapo if a suitable offer was received? At the start of the season I'd have said no as he was the only real threat we carried. But now we have multiple players who can all pose a threat on the pitch I'm less inclined and would honestly say sell if the offer was there.

I guess it depends on how tied to the "suggested" business model we are. I thought in general we were trying to "unearth" assets to sell and make us sustainable...in which case, the answer would prolly be yes..

Re: State of the Squad 2 - This Time it's Personnel
Tough one to answer. Ask me in December and I'd have said it's suicide. Now we have options, and it's possible we've already bought his replacement, or as close as we might manage.
Many factors involved, as in any potential transfer. Depends on how close any offers get to the vendors' expected resale price: some don't want to sell at all, but most are run as businesses. Depends also on whether he actually wants to leave, which turns the dials again: because the current club would sell more cheaply (rather than have a potentially disgruntled player) and because they might also get lesser offers (because word gets around and the buying club will want to keep their costs down, while the player's agent might also want to keep a greater slice of the buying club's outlay in player wage and personal fees).
There's no perfect time to sell a good player, only times that maximise money and minimise damage. By that rationale, maybe this summer is best. I'd be sad to see him go, though.

Agree with this. Would be sad if he went. But I think it might be max value this summer and we could reinvest that money or some of it. And no doubt FV want to see some returns too.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 2:00 pmTough one to answer. Ask me in December and I'd have said it's suicide. I don’t think him going would be disastrous if reinvested well. I don’t think that he’s as critical as he was in December. But it will come down to the offer. If someone offers a few million realistically he’s going whether we like it or not.
Re: State of the Squad 2 - This Time it's Personnel
Also think his best position is off the left. He can certainly do a job at 10 and up top but if we got good bunce and could spend it on specialists for this shape...
