Back on track or up the Junction.? V Crewe away, Sat19th Mar. 3-0'clock.

Instigated by Mar:

"Is it too early to start Saturdays match thread?"

Crewe, 8 points adrift of safety, languishing at the bottom of the table may see our game as a bit of a breather given their latest run of fixtures:

Plymouth (H) L 1-4
Accrington (A) L 4-1
Wigan (A) L 2-0
Oxford (H) L 0-1
Cheltenham (A) W 1-2
Wycombe (H) L 1-3
Portsmouth (H) L 1-3
Sunderland (A) L 0-2
Wigan (H) (TOMORROW)
Bolton (H) (Sat)
MK Dons (H) (26th)

Thats 1 win out of the last 8 with the only win coming against a bottom half side (Cheltenham barely making it into the bottom half sitting on 13th in the table). Everyone else they've played has been top half, so its not like fixtures have been favourable for them lately.

In our favour they have to start trying to win games which might make them open to a counter in which case there's a good chance of not having a park-the-bus style match.

Back three or back four?

Drop Johnston after two howlers in two games?

Give Amaechi a go?

Decisions, decisions.

Is Jaaskelainen junior still their goalie? Far from 'a chip off the old block' from the bits I've seen of him playing.

Not first-choice, as he was in their promotion season or for most of last season. Lost his place to Dave Richards around Halloween.

Al depends on Fossey IMO. If he is injured I would go to a back 4, Jones back in at right back. Else Jones in at Centre half. Aimson to play in a 4, Johnston in a 3. Xav could come in at right wing, Dapo/Sadlier (is Dapo injured?) left if back 4. Is Dempsey fit? Forward wise does Dion start? JDB is the only guaranteed starter up top for me.

I can see all that, Dibs. Problem with changing from 3412 to 4231 is that we've got more forwards than I can ever remember. But I guess there's four slots there, particularly in a shit-or-bust home game against weaker opposition. I'm not sure who the 10 is - Sadlier seems happiest on the ball, but might also be one of our best crossers. Bod presumably up top, with Baka replacing him. Dapo left, Xav a sub possibility. Charles on the bench? Or Charles at 9 and Bod wide right, where I suspect he wouldn't be as useful? IE thinks Kachunga can play 9, 10 or wide.

Lost a bit of shine, but I wouldn't be too unhappy if IE tried a couple of things out (of course providing we win :-) )

I'd go with the latter. Bod narrow off the right with Fossey/Jones flying forward. On the other Dapo wide left turns it into a 352 in possession.

Given the Fossey news I would go:
GK Trafford
RB Jones
LB John
CB Aimson
CB Santos
DM MJ
CM Morley
CM Dempsey
LW Sadlier
RW Charles
CF JDB

Think the funeral was Monday so maybe.

If not, and Foz is out, then it's an interesting question who plays right. In either system. Senior in a back four? Sadlier at RWB?

Not sure Sads looked a LWB when he came on for John (no problem with his forward movement but defensively, his positioning was AOTS)...So not convinced he's a RWB either. Might be tempted go go Senior in a 4. But as I said on thread earlier, if IE want's to try some "stuff" then this game might be his best shot, always with the "never give a mug a chance" proviso.

No Jones for the weekend by the sounds of it. Have to be a back 3 then with maybe Ameachi RWB?? Or senior in a back 4.

Well, the team that beat them 2-0 last time out was:

Dixon
Isgrove
Ric
Aimson
John
Williams
Sheehan
Kacha
Lee
Afolayan
Baka

So however we skin it, it's probably an improvement, even with Flossie and Jones out.

No round pegs in square holes, please. A back four, as opposed to shoehorning a winger into a wing-back role, would be my preference.

Tempted to go for back 4 with Senior, since Jones is not back till Monday. Then move Dapo back to his original left wing position. Then two from Charles/DadBod/Baka/Kachunga for the CF and Right wing slots.

Be Senior in for one of Aimson or Johnston then. Some fairly significant knock on changes with the formation. I have a feeling Evatt will keep the back 3 and just being someone in for Marlon. There’s a pic of Isgrove with one of his quotes on Twitter….I wonder if he’s fit enough to start?

I think that's what he'll do. Isgrove in for Fossey.

I think so too. Fossey was the one who really made that system work but without Gethin we have no right back nor really a great LB option in a 4.

So I think we will see how it goes without Fosseys pace and dynamism down the right. I personally think long term without him this system isn’t right but let’s see. I think our better players don’t fit into it as well and that leaves me thinking a back four now makes more sense till the end of the season.

A fit Isgrove is a good player , but much depends on how recovered he is. We do have some bad luck with our good players but I suppose other sides can say the same. Scuffle a win and the points and we'll settle against the Railway Children I reckon. Little room for error now though. Time for Dempsey, Morley, Sandlier and Ameachi to stand up and be counted. Match day is tomorrow, so COME ON YOU WHITES...... :oyea: :oyea: :oyea:
