Have just noticed that Pompey have "cooled their interest" in Accy-leaving midfielder Matt Butcher...

Interesting, hadn’t spotted that. Seemed like it was nailed on at one point.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 12:53 pmHave just noticed that Pompey have "cooled their interest" in Accy-leaving midfielder Matt Butcher...
Could be an option.

Iles is reporting that we were in for Barkhuizen and are expecting to find out shortly if he's our player or not.
He adds that we are unlikely to announce anyone until the window formally opens next Friday.

We've had no reports of Ronaldo being seen in a chip shop at Middlebrook yet. Still time.

Don’t really get this one. 29 next month and we wouldn’t appear to have a gap for a starting winger.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 6:44 amIles is reporting that we were in for Barkhuizen and are expecting to find out shortly if he's our player or not.

Unless we offload some players, maybe Isgrove, do we really need much up front?The_Gun wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:28 amDon’t really get this one. 29 next month and we wouldn’t appear to have a gap for a starting winger.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 6:44 amIles is reporting that we were in for Barkhuizen and are expecting to find out shortly if he's our player or not.

Isgrove is back up. Barkhuizen is going to expect to be a starter and would likely want reasonably big wages.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:35 amUnless we offload some players, maybe Isgrove, do we really need much up front?The_Gun wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:28 amDon’t really get this one. 29 next month and we wouldn’t appear to have a gap for a starting winger.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 6:44 amIles is reporting that we were in for Barkhuizen and are expecting to find out shortly if he's our player or not.

Can play across front three and has been a regular in the championship for 5 or 6 seasons barring the last one. I’m not really sure why we wouldn’t be interested in him.The_Gun wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:28 amDon’t really get this one. 29 next month and we wouldn’t appear to have a gap for a starting winger.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 6:44 amIles is reporting that we were in for Barkhuizen and are expecting to find out shortly if he's our player or not.

Re: Deal or no deal? - Summer 2022 Transfer gossip!
It's all curiously lukewarm. We've made our case to sign him but he wants to hear from other interested parties, like Rotherham and Derby. Ilesy seems to think Barky might be an option if Dapo goes to Rangers, but that's a sizeable if. Nixon is still linking any possible Huns move with them selling Ryan Kent first – Kent has EPL suitors but a year left on his contract, so that could be a protracted auction.
Mind, it's June 1st. The April season end, early Iredale signing and Evatt's stated desire to get deals done by the 19th may have overegged our estimations for rapid recruitment. This time last year we hadn't made a single signing - Johnston was announced on June 4th, Sheehan 7th, Dapo 17th, Baka & Dixon 25th.

There is an element of impatience on the fans part I think. It's still early in the pre-season window but given we signed Iredale really early on it seems like we've not had any news for quite some time. I have no doubt that the necessary work is being done behind the scenes to get things progressed, but given that it was we're signing Fossey next week for the past 4 weeks it seems like things are going quiet on the incoming front, when in reality, its early doors.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:48 amIt's all curiously lukewarm. Dapo, Sadlier, Charles, Bodvarsson is a really good starting League One rotation. Why would we bring another forward, with no resale value, in on big wages? If Dapo leaves then yeah maybe, but not if he’s staying.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 10:42 amCan play across front three and has been a regular in the championship for 5 or 6 seasons barring the last one. It’s pretty clear we want another forward maybe two. So yeah whether we have enough there is one question. But Evatt seems to want more. And proven championship quality as we’ve already seen with Bod can be very very good.The_Gun wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 11:40 amDapo, Sadlier, Charles, Bodvarsson is a really good starting League One rotation. If he was 35 then sure. But still in his 20’s and over a hundred championship games in his experience for me everyone in league one would be interested.

Don't forget Bakayoko in that equation
Barkuizen will bring Championship experience and allow tactical flexibility. If we're looking to upgrade certain positions then it's a given that we'd replace lge1/2 players with those from further up the pyramid.

Replacements for outgoings are definitely a consideration (should they happen) but I would doubt that we'd be actively making the forward line our main focus of attention.

Barky has mostly played as a wing back for Preston recently.
So he would be viable as a Championship-level player in multiple positions all our systems.
I'm not sure what the issue is.

If we don’t sign Fossey, then perhaps, but if we do then he’s the starting right wing back.

Re: Deal or no deal? - Summer 2022 Transfer gossip!
We'll play 50+ games next season. How many of those would we expect Fossey to start?
The squad is about having options. Barky can start plenty of games over a season without having to be seen as just "a striker", "a winger" or "a wing back."

Sadlier/Jones are good back up options.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 2:21 pmWe'll play 50+ games next season. How many of those would we expect Fossey to start?

I just don’t see we’re in a position to be signing 29 year old back ups on big wages.

Re: Deal or no deal? - Summer 2022 Transfer gossip!
Again, though, why would he be a back-up? He's an option in a squad and he can play at a Championship level in multiple positions.
He would likely start 30+ games a season, he'd just not always play the same position/role.
I really don't understand why that's a tricky concept. If we play multiple systems we can't expect players to always play exactly the same role over a 50+ game season.
It's very similar to Spurs having just signed Perisic. He's going to start most games for them, but he might not always play in the same spot. Where they need him to play will be determined by who else is available, but he's a starter most games.
Barky is a better right wingback option than both Sadlier and Jones, but can't play right back like Jones can and isn't as good as a left wing back option as Sadlier. So the utility in the squad is solid and everyone stays relevant.

I guess a good yardstick would be TTA, he's been involved in 48? this season?GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 2:21 pmWe'll play 50+ games next season. How many of those would we expect Fossey to start?
