Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Not much noise around outgoings so far. I’m still very much in the camp of wanting John and Sadlier out the door, but it seems quite likely there might be a shortage of suitors. If we’re willing to cancel their contracts and let them leave for free, which we almost certainly would be, then hopefully we’ll find clubs willing to take a chance on them later in the window.
I also thought we might have Championship clubs sniffing around Toal, Santos and Johnston, but perhaps the seeming end of the profligacy in that division will see us safe in that regard.

You can’t unilaterally cancel a players contract. They are entitled to their wages. If someone is prepared to pay the same amount over the same term then you can waive a fee but I doubt any player is giving up a wage full stop.The_Gun wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2023 9:57 amNot much noise around outgoings so far. Obviously I wasn’t suggesting we’d be able to cancel their contracts without their agreement.
The key point is whether other clubs would be willing to offer them what they’re currently getting, or if the respective players would be willing to take pay cuts to move on.

It's normally an actuarial decision on both sides.The_Gun wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2023 11:09 amObviously I wasn’t suggesting we’d be able to cancel their contracts without their agreement.

Say, for the sake of argument, an unwanted player is on £5k per week with a year left. That's £260k to which he's legally entitled (along with any bonuses). If you really don't want him, and think he will hang around like a stench, would you offer him £100k to go away? He could still decline - as, famously, Winston Bogarde did.
But what if a club - Wrexham, say - want him but will only offer him £3k per week? You could loan him out and pay the other £2k, or for the same overall price you could get him off the books. That might depend on your finances, and theirs, and his.
The player will want his money – no argument from me there – and will often hang about until the desire to play (or to leave an enivronment where he's wasting his time in a short career) overcomes the financial considerations. But remember these lads also have mortgages and (usually) families, with kids whose school years parallel the football season. If they think they're gonna leave, they'll prefer to do it in summer - if the price is right and the destination's appealing.

I imagine, without checking that we've had players under contract and we've swapped their due difference in wages for forgoing a transfer fee..
Think we did this with Sarcevic

But yeah, loads of examples of us offering players a settlement figure of about 50% of their salary for them to and get a new club on full wages the next week.

Ha yeah Sarcevic was clearly a "pay the bill, boot the player" situation. And in the Lennon/Parkinson era we often needed to cut debts ASAP – so agreeing to pay a bloke say £100k to not play for us made more (financial) sense than owing him £200k. I believe they call it cutting your losses.
But yeah, it has to suit all parties. Sometimes it's quick (Sarce) and sometimes slow (Comley). I don't think we'll be throwing John and Sadlier onto the street with a bulging brown paper envelope apiece.

Nathan Bishop has had his deal extended by a year by Utd (clause triggered). Di'Shon Bernard has left the club.
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Bernard was the one at Pompey? Is he any good?

Local south London rag is reporting a ‘top League One club’ have made an offer for Millwall’s Tyler Burey.
I suppose we would fit into that category, but perhaps this is more likely to be one of our rivals.

In managerial transfer news, Michael Duff is being heavily linked with the vacant Swansea job. I’d dare say that would be good news for us.

People are saying Nixon has "deal done" on Dabo and Savin. I don't follow him, so I'm just going off the Twitterati's utterances.
