Up for the cups (again) in 23/24?
Well, the thread worked last time...
Our defence of the Pizza Pot will start in a group featuring Sarce's Stockport, Worthy's Salford and a kids team TBC tomorrow (options: Everton, Liverpool, Leicester, City, United, Newcastle, Forest, Wolves)
I daresay some will say Concentrate On The League but we saw last season that cups can be fun!!

Wouldn’t say no to Wembley again. Doubt anyone has ever won back to back pizza cups.
Bit of needle in the Stockport game as well - I’m sure they will fancy that one.

Aye. I don't think we know yet whether games are home or away. We'll have one of each from those two plus home to the kiddiwinks.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2023 12:59 pmWouldn’t say no to Wembley again. Doubt anyone has ever won back to back pizza cups.

The (big boys) League Cup draw is also tomorrow, at 2.30pm. Plus of course league fixtures, but that's none of this thread's business

Pizza trophy was fun last season, but I can see us de-prioritising this time round. Runs in the other cups would be nice, though.

This feels sensible right now.
When we're in the season, and if we have the squad depth/quality we hope/think/expect, we should have relatively underinvolved players itching to play in the cups for stake-claiming purposes.
Plus hopefully, some of the B-teamers might be nearer to ready this year.

In all seriousness, another trip to Wembley with us sat 15 points clear at the top of the league would be most welcome.

The squad we appear to be building is one that should "have a go" in all comps.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2023 3:15 pmIn all seriousness, another trip to Wembley with us sat 15 points clear at the top of the league would be most welcome.
The 2nd string should be good enough to have a crack at that "top 8, might flirt with 6th" positioning in League One.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't prioritise the league, but we should be able to put out strong sides in the cups and still go fully at the league.
Hopefully we go into every game seeing it as something to win, rather than that we just want it over with to refocus.

It'd be nice. Just been looking back at our recent adventures in the two big boys' cups: One win in the last 11, two if you count pengies.
Re: Up for the cups (again) in 23/24?
Loving those cup draws:
FLT: Salford, Stockport, Man Utd U21 (H)
LC: Barrow(H)
Not sure which of those two fixtures (Salford / Stockport) will be at home, but we're guaranteed at least one. Plenty of history with those teams to spice up the fixture, and Barrow at home will be a nice match for Evatt.
Even better that we've not drawn teams in our league. Nothing worse than playing sides that we're already going to face (looking at you Barnsley from last year).

This club has forgotten its roots and become caught up in that "only the league matters" mentality.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 2:53 pmIt'd be nice. Just been looking back at our recent adventures in the two big boys' cups: One win in the last 11, two if you count pengies.
Obviously the league is the most important thing most seasons, but we should always be a strong cup team. Bolton used to be regarded as one of the great cup teams and we should aim to get back there. I remember watching football shows as a kid and it always being said, "Bolton always do well in the cup, so you'd never bet against them." Nobody wanted to draw us, not even the top sides.
"We're in League One, we're not going to win it"...not with that attitude we won't, sunshine
The Toughsheet Community Stadium should be rocking on a cup night. The club has to lead on that, though. If you show you don't care the fans won't either.
Re: Up for the cups (again) in 23/24?
I disagree. I think your comment that only the league matters certain held weight when Big Sam, Megson, etc. were in charge, but that doesnt seem to be the case under Evatt.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 3:01 pmThis club has forgotten its roots and become caught up in that "only the league matters" mentality.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 2:53 pmIt'd be nice. The decision to play a weakened team helps with squad rotation and keeps people fresh. Presumably for keeping the entire squad happy and to benefit the league, but I suspect a lot of that is down to the presumption that we're against lower league opposition and that the opposition are playing a rotated team also.
Later on in the competition it should be first team all the way and no forgiveness given for anyone that decides to throw the competition, ala Megson whose decision still disgusts me to this very day.

It’s not a Bolton thing it’s a broader thing. Cups are a sideshow till the latter stages. Even then they are for some.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 3:01 pmThis club has forgotten its roots and become caught up in that "only the league matters" mentality.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 2:53 pmIt'd be nice. The league has to always be priority like it or not. Until you are maybe safe midtable in the premiership and unable to climb higher.
