Red cards and Red Kits, Bolton v Charlton - 17th Feb 2024 3pm

Post by Mar » Thu Feb 15, 2024 10:30 am

Thought i'd get the ball rolling on this one given that we've got Charlton coming on Saturday.

News just in that we've got Ross Joyce as referee. The ref that's known for giving out red cards like candy. Probably a good thing that Evatt and Thomason are suspended.

Last 6 games refereeing Bolton:

Bolton 1:1 Peterborough - Jones red card
Port Vale 0:0 Bolton - Santos red card (two yellows), Evatt red card
Morecambe 1:1 Bolton - Santos red card and penalty (saved), the one that hit his chest
Bolton 2:2 Cheltenham
Carlisle 3:3 Bolton
Shrewsbury 2:1 Bolton - Kioso red card

(No reds for the opposition of course)

So that's not looking good. It's not just us, he's issues 9 red cards in 25 games this season. So he's throwing cards around like candy. We may end up with him going easy on us this match, looks like a pattern if we got 4 in a row.

Despite the referee becoming a feature going into the game, we've got a good record against Charlton and they've not won in around 12 games so unless we're going to be charitable we should be able to see this one out.

Suspect Dion may be out of contention for this one so its anyones guess who starts for this one.

Starter for 10.....

Coleman
JDC
Jones
Toal
Iredale
Ashworth
Sheehan
Maghoma
Dempsey
Collins
JDB

3-1 to us. JDB carry on his "rich" scoring vein / Collins off the mark / CMG off the bench to score
Santos &/or Forrester to come on for a 10 minute cameo at the end to shore up the defence

Will also stick my neck out and predict much moaning from the fans around me as we play out from the back / lots of clapping when we play it long (despite it coming straight back to the defence from their defenders' heads / lots of shouts about how playing out from the back is rubbish and doesn't work (despite all evidence pointing to the contrary).

As long as we keep 11 on the pitch, which seems incredibly unlikely with Ross Joyce officiating us, we should beat these. They have quality, but have a soft centre and are on a horrendous run.

2-1 Bolton after going a goal behind

Talent wise Charlton should not be where they are, and I expect at some point they’ll stage a resurgence, just hopefully not beginning on Saturday.

Assuming Santos again doesn’t start, I am slightly concerned about our how back line might fare against a dangerous bunch of forwards, including the returning Chuks Aneke.

Don’t think we’ll keep them out, but don’t think they’ll keep us out either. 3-2 Bolton.

If I were a referee and good at my job, I'd make a point of reading the fans sites of whoever was my next game? Just to see what they may think of my work. Then again, I'm not a referee. As to the game, twill be a spirited affair as ever when the Roses meet. Another were great care is needed, the Tykes are not our best friends.

Quite so, B.B. The thread title's plain enough, Charlton are the least of my worries. I just got my fixture list mixed up. Mind on other things. Sorry.

Interesting choice of ref, but he was spot on with the Gethin jones red last time out…we know he’s a card waver (exact opposite to Tuesday) so we’ll need to play accordingly. Would be an obvious game to rest Thomason regardless.

Ref the match, the likes of Charlton are the sort we daren't lose if we want to continue our quest. We'll just have to be clinical and see only forward.

That really is bad news. Dion is the engine that never stops running. Hope he gets fit and well soon. At least a chance to see what we have in reserve combination wise.

Our V(A)C will hoover all the goals in the meantime...It was always possible DC or JDC got injured (or Baxter or Big Ric) etc. Only a couple of games back weren't Pompey counting three in the same week? Not ideal, for sure, but hopefully our new boys can step up.

I reckon it'll be an AC/VA combo up front on Sat. I don't think Evatt would try a Collins/Dad Bod pairing to start with.

I think bod will start - Cameron / Jerome on the bench are too similar. Dion is a “couple of weeks” - there are some big games in that couple of weeks but it’s not the disaster it would have been a couple of months ago. No update on Baxter mind.

Dion needed taking out of the team for a bit anyway, although I’d obviously prefer he wasn’t injured.

Big chance for Collins and Bod to pick up the mantle and start firing in the goals. They’re both capable of it.

Charles being a few weeks is great news, I was expecting much worse. Ref is going to wreck this game though isn't he.

Yep I fully agree!

However I don't think Bod and Collins strike me as a natural partnership - they're both more 10 than 9 and neither strikes me as a press-leader. I would personally guess that Vic will come in for Dion, do an hour's hard work and then Bod comes on - with Jerome I suppose as Collins isn't up to an hour (and Evatt usually changes both strikers anyway).

If that does become the plan, it's a big chance for Vic, who has altered his game to fit around Dion (fair enough).

Let's talk football. Going to seem strange with Dion not figuring; I can imagine he's feeling pretty pxxxxx of right now, but he'll no doubt cheer us on. I'd love this to be the time Dad Bod comes forth and stakes his claim. Charlton are thirty points adrift of us, but in the crazy world of football, that means little as regards forecasting. Three losses and two draws from the last five for them, and two draws and three wins for us should point at a win, but nobody will mortgage their house on a certainty. We just have to play the way we can and avoid carelessness. Alfie May is ever dangerous for them, but Dixie Dean, rather then Mr Bean up front should see us home, so COME ON YOU WHITES... , Get in there and stamp some authority for us. Cometh the hour etc.. :Jedi:
