Re: Middle East Crisis
Can you stop killing everyone, please
Yes, if you convert to our idea of Islam
Well, no - We won't do that
Okay, then I'll chop your fvckin head off right now and put it on the internet

I would very much recommend reading what Jonathan Powell has written - someone who has done this at the sharp end...
there's a short version of his case (made at greater length in his book) here:

I've read that book and if you think he advocates having tea with ISIS you're off your rocker.thebish wrote:I would very much recommend reading what Jonathan Powell has written - someone who has done this at the sharp end...

Also, ISIS are struggling big time and are expected to lose Mosul and Raqqa in the nearish future. As well as their deputy leader having been killed a couple of weeks ago. The idea that "bombing" or "not bombing" are the answer is incredibly 2D. Sometimes bombs help, sometimes they don't.

I think history shows us not starting wars with people generally makes them not war with us. 'The West' invading Iraq played a major part in the formation of the very same people who want to butcher us right nowBWFC_Insane wrote:Cos historically burying our heads and hoping stuff going on elsewhere won't impact us has paid handsome dividends?boltonboris wrote:Tell them to stay the feck away from us and we'll stay the feck away from them, would be a start.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I agree that is not an option, but lobbing a few bombs in from a distance and expecting anything to get fixed is even more stupid. You know I'm no such thing.. But some things are better left alone. Let that part of the world deal with itself. Re: Middle East Crisis
Well it worked for Neville Chamberlain.
And Isis formed directly from al-Qaeda, and they didn't exist before Iraq.

Oh, and ISIS's main target in western Europe has been France - probably due to their involvement in the Iraq war.

Bombing gets you as far as getting rid of ISIS. You need a plan for afterwards. If we'd didn't the last Christ knows how long doing what we should have been, backing secular democrats and not selling weapons to theocratic dictators it might be less difficult. My feeling now it's it probably involves not just talks but ugly concessions with Assad.
Imo though a lot lies at the door of Obama. His red line should have been followed up on.
