They filmed Saving Private Ryan round there. Did the (now defunct) parkrun and you can still see the remnants of the sets they built.Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 3:34 pmThere's the HSV sprint tri at the De Havilland campus in Welwyn/ Hatfield (Sprint. The course is in and around Rutland Water which is a gorgeous part of the country (South Nottingham/ North Lincolnshire-ish)
Anyone else got plans?
However...knee is pretty fragile atm so have been doing circuits and swimming, which are starting to grow on me. Circuits being done with my class pass free trial, finishing with one this evening. Will probs reinvest in it though as it's stuff I won't do otherwise and it's helping a lot. The swimming is done with the tri club. I usually avoid it as I'm bad at swimming, however I've started to go regular the last two weeks and the improvements are coming, although I'm still rather slow. Need to book a race in though, I've no idea where my running is atm.
I believe there is a Dartford series across the summer
London Triathlon (in the docklands) is boring but a good test.
Lots of options down there.
After this Sunday I only have Salford Standard at the end of July so am scouting round for a couple more.
Good luck with the recovery. Research work on the adductor and abductor muscles to help support the knee.
Story!

I’ve just watched my daughter spend the morning swimming for an hour and then doing gymnastics for an hour and a half. Tired me out. Had to have a McDonald’s breakfast to recoup my energy levels.Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 2:22 pmLooking forward to Dambuster Triathlon this Sunday

Re: The athletics/running thread
Not me directly but I'm excited for this weekend.
Ironman returns to Bolton and a number of my friends (with mutual acquaintances on here) are taking part this weekend. North Bolton Tri have the second largest number of participants this year. Can't wait to get down on the course and cheer them on. If you're out and about round Bolton this weekend don't moan about road closures, just save a thought for those people who are making a phenomenal effort (and in most cases raising phenomenal amounts of money) over the whole weekend. For those of you not familiar IM is:
2.5 mile Open Water Swim
112 mile Bike Ride
26.2 miles (yes, a marathon)
This has to be completed within 17 hours. It's bloody tough. I have done it 3 times now and each time declare it's my last. After running/ cycling/ swimming with my buddies in recent weeks though..........I may have one more in me.......

Re: The athletics/running thread
What an inspirational day. Couldn't be prouder of my club mates and all the other souls who got through that absolute swine of a course. The winner was a local lad in just over 9.5 hours but the real heroes were those guys and girls still out for up to 17 hours. A few fell by the wayside which is always to be expected but everyone gave their all. It was announced today that Ironman UK is set to stay in Bolton for another 5 years which is fantastic news for the area.Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Thu Jun 30, 2022 12:04 pmNot me directly but I'm excited for this weekend.

Re: The athletics/running thread
That is indeed great news. I thought I heard it was ending this year.
Didn't get there to watch in the end. A few mates did it though. It crosses my mind occasionally but I just struggle with the concept of the training required. And the cost brings me out a bit Bijou Bob

The cost is prohibitive but I have to say it's worth the money. Registration, marshalling, the organisation around keeping 2,000 athletes safe for almost 24 hours, you understand where the fees go. It's a massive organisation and they wouldn't do it if there was no profit in it. But man, the euphoria of crossing that finish line is immense.LeverEnd wrote: ↑Mon Jul 04, 2022 11:38 pmThat is indeed great news. I thought I heard it was ending this year.

I have to say also, the experience of observing it from The Retreat was something else. I definitely prefer running past it.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I understand why it costs so much but still baulk at sending it. Especially with all the kit you need. If I manage a marathon next year without a limb falling off I'll consider it for 2024

Yeah. The start up cost isn't cheap. But you can pick up some cheap gear to start with and upgrade if you want to pursue it further. Best time to buy wetsuits is now. Second hand you can pick one up for around £50. Bikes can be borrowed. It's doable. What you really need a lot of is time. At least 6 months to train properly.

Have you got a marathon planned? Will you stay injury free long enough?!
