Bit sorry for Laura Muir who got bronze in the 800 metres, but our Sarah Hodkinson took the silver. Of all the memorable track events the real highlights for me will ever be the women's steeplechase and of course, Ellish McColgan's brilliant 10,000 metres gold win. I've seen eras of great mddle distance running with the likes of Steve Cram, Steve Ovett, Dave Bedford and Sebastian Coe, but I won't ever forget this...... G.O.A.T?

Women play hockey better than men; it's a fact. They just beat Oz women and won gold. Our men had 13 penalty corners , didn't score one and lost a bronze medal chance. Buck up lads... :oyea: .

And Laura goes out and gets gold in the 1500 metres and Ellish a silver in the 5000. Scotland's day and well deserved.

A great games for the 2 Scots. Keely Hodgkinson must be frustrated with another Silver. That's Olympics, Worlds and now commonwealth. I'm sure she'll be a champion because she's a fantastic athlete. Maybe the euros soon?
It's an impressive era for sure, but the Coe, Ovett, Cram, Elliott years will never be touched for me. I loved it as a kid.
Best sports book I ever read is 'The Perfect Distance ' by journalist Pat Butcher. Brilliant.

Didn't manage to catch any of this until Saturday where I caught the final over of the women getting beat by India before watching the netball team get stuffed by Australia. At that point, I figured they were probably better off without my support.

Heartbreak for the 4 x 400 relay team yesterday. Win gold by the thinnest of margins, only to then be DQ’d.

Table tennis. I guess it's one of those things that you'll have to have had a decent do at (so, beyond youth club level) to be able to enjoy.

My mate's brother used to play it to a competitive level down at the Drill Hall. Used to go apeshit if you called it ping pong 😁

That must have been so heartbreaking. Said this in a previous post, but the whole disqualification thing need an overall. It isn't as if anybody intends to cheat (if they do, fair enough) but to train all that time and put in such an effort only to be denied by accident is totally wrong for me. One of the (Jamaican?) female sprinters looked quite shocked with disbelief as she was escorted from the track by an official for over eagerness in starting yesterday. It's wrong, wrong wrong!. Once and a warning, okay, but they're only human after all.

Another thing, is overstepping the line in jump events. If the electronics show your short, add that distance on. If you overstep, deduct by how much from the jump distance. Not rocket science and no need for red flags. It's about how far you can jump wherever it's from surely?

Spinner's Hall on St George's Road Bruce? Been there many a time to the youth club. (Y.M.C.A?) and I used to play football for Vincents who were based there. Happy days..
Or was it Wood Street Drill Hall Barracks you meant?

Ah, right, thanks. Silverwell street and Wood Street are side by side. My error. (What exotic names parts of our town has that we take for granted "Silverwell, Deansgate, Halliwell etc?) Mind you my memories of Wood Street are not really in the exotic class.

Overall, a good show by Birmingham and an even better one by our athletes. I thought the closing ceremony was a bit lacking somehow, and the lyrics of Nick Cave and Ozzy Osbourne not totally ideal to inspire joy and good will to all men. At least we didn't have to suffer Noddy Holder doing "Here it is Merry Christmas" .

Well done Brum.. :oyea:
