Whole of Breightmet is changing.
You see alot of people bought thier council houses cheap and have done them up.
If its yours, you look after it.
If its not, who gives a sh*t.

Even the school has all the latest eqiupment.

But the area has a stigma.

Why don't you now have a look up Newby Road, all change. For the better!!!!
Sister in law had a house in Somerton Road. Nice tidy area. Far cry from the Breightmet of old when The Rocket was Bolton's answer to the OK Corral.
TG wuold you class Somerton Road as Breightmet?

More than a tad simplistic. While I've painted a grim picture of Breightment (or Top O'th Brow to be precise) there were still decent people who rented their houses and kept them in good order.

I was brought up in a council house and my parents kept it in pristine condition. It's about self respect as much as ownership.

It's also worth mentioning that Breightmet is a very large area. It's the Top O'th Brow bit of it that's created the stigma.

Yes, but on the civilised side of Bury Road. Anything below the top Bull was always Breightmet to us. De Lacey drive area used to be a real nest of vipers at one time.

I'd say De Lacey Drive is more Tonge Moor than Breightmet.

A few years ago a mate of mine who works for the water board had to repair a main there and left an open hole in the road overnight. Regulations say that in those circumstances you have to leave red lamps at the margins of the hole so that no one falls in. He did this knowing full well that the lamps wouldn't be there in the morning.

Sure enough, the next morning they'd gone. He had just started work when a woman appeared, clutching all six of the lamps.

"You left these out last night," she said, "they'll nick anything round here!"

Yeah, I suppose it is a bit border-line Warty. The again, we tended to generalise a bit more then. The three areas nobody wanted to be in were: the Delacey Drive one, Breightmet in genearal and Johnson Fold. Practically every villain in Bolton came from one of them.

De Lacy Drive ? Eh Gads!!!

The first time I ever heard of that place was when it was in the BEN that a bloke was up before the Magistrates. His wife had come home only to find him shagging the family dog.

The second time I heard of De Lacy Drive was not long after we'd left school and one of my mates had got a job with the Council as an apprentice Joiner. He was forever being called out to DLD to replace doors and floorboards which the residents had used for firewood. Of course, no sooner had he finished than the fruits of his labour were also on their way up in smoke.

Some of the stories that he told us were literally jaw dropping!

Last time I heard, the Council were spending a mint on finishing off knocking the lot down and giving them all brand new houses to wreck!
May the bridges I burn light your way

Er, no K, I didn't forget it, I live in Farnworth. New Bury and Highfield are bad enough, but only apprentices compared to Johnson Fold and DLD. Again, I come from Halliwell which used to be a big fun area at one time. Best years of my life were spent in The Lamb, Bolton Palais and all the rest. Happy days.
