SKY Broadband.....

Post by Bench » Sat Sep 08, 2007 10:40 am

Anyone got it?

Just making the switch from Virgin Media to Sky+ and thinking about changing the Broadband too. I've heard some mixed reviews (admittedly from Virgin!). What are your experiences of it? Any good?

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Anything the get me off fxcking AOL! I was wondering if the Sky broadband bill comes out at the same time as the Sky tv bill, which would be much better then AOL taking it out whenever they bloody well felt like it!

you need to use their router (a modded netgear one) so if it breaks - i suspect getting a swap takes time ..

the tech support is sposed to be crap if its summert hard to sort, hours 'ont phone , altho its free (i think) ...

if it'll do 8mbitsps for a fiver , or 16mbitsps for a tenner ... thats cheap..

an indiependant website for it heres- www.skyuser.co.uk (?might be .com?)

Hi Bench,

I've got Sky Broadband, just the basic free package which is about 2MB.

Got to say that I have had no problems with it to date (touch wood!!) and it was really easy to set up. When you have registered with them over the phone, they send you a letter to confirm and a date in which it will be available to you (BT have to do something to your phoneline - you don't have to be in though).

In the meantime, they post out to you your new router, software etc (with free McAfee Antivirus) to install from the date on the original letter.

They offer an installation service for about £40 but it's really not worth it. I know bugger all about computers and even I could set it up easily.

One thing slightly annoying is that your e-mails are via a special Sky Broadband webiste (a bit like Hotmail) and this can be a bit slow sometimes but you do get a good e-mail address (if you choose to use it) in the format of '[email protected]'

Hope this helps.

Edit: Free broadband speed is upto 4MB, on test mine was just over 2MB

Does the direct debit come out with/at the same time as your Sky TV bill each month? (This is the main problem with AOL, they take it out whenever they bloody well feel like!)

There is a download limit on the free service and the £5 option. Even though I have downloaded plenty of music, never hit the limit.

I personally swear by sky broadband. My package is a fiver a month for 8meg with a 40gig a month limit.

I had a few problems with the switchover from the sharks at Orange but that was to be expected.

Aye. It's included as part of the normal Sky bill.

On that note......we're not defecting to Sky any more. Pretty much got a sensational deal with Virgin to stick around. Will reveal more after the following commercial break.....

You're a funny guy, Caps.

They've offered us:

The Family Pack TV Package (which is all the usual free gumf and the childrens channels)
Talk Unlimited (free weekend and evening calls)
Talk Mobile (25% reduction in cost on calls to mobiles)
4meg Broadband (which increases to 10meg for nowt in December)

All for £27.50 per month (plus calls, obviously) For all of the above (less Talk Mobile) we have been previously paying £35 per month plus.

On top of that, they're coming round this Saturday to install a modem (for the 10 meg upgrade) for free AND they've given us the V+ box (equivalent of Sky+) for free (normally either £150 one-off charge or £10 per month).

Just goes to show, you can get a lot for yer money if you look like you're about to depart for greener pastures.

I've got Sky+ and Multiroom

And BB and phone from Virgin

Do Virgin do multiroom?

What other Sky features are there that Virgin don't offer (if any?)

Oh aye, and how much does it cost

As far as I can tell Virgin don't do multiroom per se....but you can V+ and a set-top box elsewhere in your castle, so maybe that's the equivalent? V+ is also compatible with HD TV's, while with sky you have to purchase another box - this time with Sky HD. The downside to Virgin is that you lose out on the likes of Sky One, Sky Two and Sky Sports News.

And Broadband from Virgin is better than Sky. A LOT better. More reliable, and the speed isn't far from what they sell you. With Sky you're restricted by the phone line and how far you are actually situated from the main exchange. They'll sell you the dream of 'up to 16meg', but in truth you may only get as little as 2meg.

Reet, I shall look deeper

As for SSN, thats a must have, but Virgin/Setanta (which is free I do believe, another thumbs up) are bringing out a rival offering

Aye.....and they're also bringing out Virgin One soon (rival to Sky One apparently)....

And and and.....

You better move sharpish son.....all existing customers get a broadband upgrade for nowt before the end of the year. So I'll be going from a merry 4meg to an astoundingly ecstatic 10meg.....

and if you reckon you're actually GONNA get 10meg then you want to lay off the ale pal.

If you get a third of that you'll be doing well.

UK lags (geddit) behind most EU countries for broadband speed.
