slightly off topic of supporting bands, my friend from uni was lucky enough to be in washington and get a ticket to see the 30 year anniversary tour of Inflamable Material. i was sooooo jealous, apparently they were amazing, and he couldnt hear for three days afterwards. added to that on the way back to his hotel he got accosted by 'the fattest hooker in the world'. as for bands that have become famous, i saw the view, not so much as support but as a lower order part of the album chart show on channel 4 about a month before they became mainstream big. they were ok to be fair, sounded quite tight if a little uninspiring.

More to the point, he's a self-declared Man Utd fan. Hence my dislike.

I have quite a collection of similar purchases myself, alongside the "that was a reasonable single I'll try the Album" shelf :-)
Shurely iTunes and such are phasing this out now? My benchmark's five - if I like that many I'll buy the album, and if it just so happens that they're a band with five singles and five fillers, I'll be bloody wary for next time... power's in the consumer's hands...

The same tour they played the Town Hall, first time ever in Bolton. They sounded absolutely appalling and I couldn't figure out why as in 28 years ( ) of watching them they've never sounded anything other than superb. Anyhow, a few months ago I went watching The Damned at the same venue and they too sounded like shit. In conclusion, don't go watching anyone that's playing upstairs in the Town Hall, the roof's too high and the acoustics are absolutely dreadfull. I must also point out that this should never put you off going watching anyone that's playing in the small room downstairs, especially if they're performing an acoustic set. Fingers were back out on tour in March and turned in one of their best ever sets at The Academy.

Sure is DSB. Doesn't stop the 30 years of shelf fillers that happened before iTunes

Likewise anyone that's ever offered anything by way of praise to Green Day, Less Than Jake, Blink however many and so on. Let them hear how it was done properly. I'll keep you posted on dates and venues, fella. Expect something around October time.

bit harsh to dismiss green day and blink completely. cant say im familiar with less than jake. early green day stuff is very good, early blink stuff is listenable to. none of it is great, and a lot of that american scene is along the theme of 'im so hard done to daddy wont buy me a car' but there are some good bits. i wouldnt say it comes anywhere close, but slappy hours or dookie are the nearEST to proper punk of that scene that i have heard. i dont buy into the write somebody off as soon as they become big, but for me green day have become VERY average since they got big. they have become dull and uninteresting whereas another band from a similar time if not genre, the Chilis have kept the ability to create new and interesting ideas.

Think so? Really? Frusciante provokes some beautiful harmonies but I'm so bored of that rackety funk thing they do - I'm sure I've heard the verse to By The Way on a dozen albums of theirs...

i think stadium arcadium is there best album since mother's milk. frusciante is an awesoem awesome guitarist, everything he does is so simple, and so slow, yet so perfect. as for the funk thing, they ARE a funk band, flea is the best slap and funk bassist in the world (imho) and all their music is organic and jam based, for instance live, john improvises a lot of solo's. i think to say 'that funk they do' is like saying that downstroke fast thing the ramones do. Obviously through time a shock appeal of a band, and their ability to make a record that jumps up and smacks you in the face decreases, but stadium arcadium is a SERIOUSLY good album. i certainly think they have lasted better than their big two contempory bands, green day and erm...nirvana (whistles awkwardly). obviously nirvana would have a tricky job to still be going, but whilst i am a fan i dont think the foo fighters have as many diverse and interesting ideas.

RHCP definitely have lasted long than Nirvana because they replaced/swapped their deceased/hooked members when heroin called time. What an odd thing to say.

that was why i was whistling awkwardly  nirvana would have a tricky time to still be going. that said all the best chili's stuff in my view has come from the chad, flea, john and anthony line up, and strictly speaking flea is the only one to have been there continuously since the start. taking the chilis as that line up, i think they have evolved and come up with a lot more interesting stuff than green day or foo fighters have. to put out an album like stadium arcadium 20 years after the band started is in my view an awesome acheivement. oasis, another band i love for different reasons, were struggling 5 and ten years later.

Apart from the fact that 90% of the chillis stuff is incredibly boring and that most of their stuff sounds the same?

Don't know if the Bridgewater Hall has ever hosted rock concerts, but the accoustics are truly amazing. Mind you, it is the home of The Halle, so it would have to be pretty good.

I do know the Bridgwater's on big springs, so when the trams rumble past it doesn't spoil yer enjoyment. Yes, I used to be an architecture/engineering journalist...
