Important Fundraising news!

Post by Gary the Enfield » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:01 pm

I am raising money for two charities by running the London Marathon this year. The charities are Great Ormond Street Hospital and Breakthrough Breast Cancer

It is the one and only time I will do a marathon and so I am looking to raise the maximum amount for these two organisations.

They are very personal to me as, firstly, my son was treated for a Congenital Heart defect at Great Ormond Street. Unfortunately he died during his second lot of surgery just before his third birthday.

Secondly, my Mum is currently undergoing chemotherapy following surgery, as she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer just before Christmas.

The links are below:

I would ask that people who want to, should donate to one or the other depending on which they sympathise most with. Or they could split the money over both

I also have a signed Match Ball (this season) to give to someone who bids the most, on the forum, with all the money going to the two charities.

As I say, this is the one and only time I will do this, so make no excuses for asking you to support these worthy causes.

Thanks

On Saturday I ran a 5k race in 21.32 (a personal best) seems all this distance work helps the speed stuff, too!

Yesterday I completed 21 miles over a quite hilly course. It took slightly over 3 hours so I'm on track for a sub 3hr 45min. marathon.

Donations are coming in and I'd like to thank all those who have given so far.

Keep it up, guys!

A small donation is coming your way. Good luck with the run.

Come on boys and girls - dig deep! It's a very worthy cause and it's easy to donate via the links.

Thanks.

Latest update.

Saturday I completed my longest run. 22 miles on a flat(ish) route at race pace (between 8:15 and 8:30 per mile). Completed in 3hrs 03mins so I am on track for my sub 3:45

I now start to taper my long runs (only 18 miles on Saturday to look forward to), whilst maintaining the two speed sessions during the week. Less than 3 weeks to go now and getting nervous.

Thanks for the donations so far and remember, there is a free signed match ball for the biggest single donation!

Cheers guys.

Yer mad as a hatter. Good luck with it. I recommend hopping on the Jubilee Line from Canary Wharf to Westminster...should make your time a bit quicker if there aren't any engineering works

Just under a week to go now and I'm getting nervous.

Imaginary pains in my legs and an almost psychotic reaction to anyone with a sniffle is turning me into a nervous wreck.

Just a reminder for all those who want to donate, but haven't yet, the links are below.

I know it's easy to get compassion fatigue in this day and age, so I thank those who have contributed so far, and those who have just taken the time to read.

Cheers and look out for me on the day!!!!!!

Well, it's done.

Time 4:01:48 (damn)

Halfway was 1:47 but I developed a cramp at 19 miles I couldn't shake, so ran/ walked the remainder.

Thanks for the donations guys, very much appreciated by Great Ormond Street and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Off out soon for beer.

Last update.

The just giving pages are due to close in the next week or so. I just wanted to say that to date I have raised over £1200 for both charities and would like to thank you all for the kind messages and donations.

I have applied for the Marathon again next year but only to beat that damned 4hour mark.

Thanks again.

Just a note to say this post is now defunct and can be unstickied and allowed to float (sink) gently to the bottom of the e-ocean to gently be absorbed into the ether.

Bon journee.

All anyone has to do is ask and we'll create a sticky post any time for these sort of things.
