Istanbul.... not Constantinople?

Post by David Lee's Hair » Thu Jan 06, 2011 9:56 am

Right, advice needed....

Taking the Ms's to Istanbul for valentines, she loves the city, and works out there every few months, and really wants to go as purely a tourist for a change, rather than trekking through factories.

Anyhow, got the hotel sorted views over the Golden Horn, happens to be Agathe Christie's favourite hotel in Istanbul where she always stayed when she went. Opened for and relatively unchanged since the Orient Express went to Istanbul. All looks pretty nice, and I'm sure it'll go down well.

What I need to know is any nice restaurants.

Have been recommended a place called Al Jamal, and looked through lonely planet and stuff - it's always best to see if anyone has actually been to any of these places, so...

Anyone been, and got any advice/recommendations?

Thats a big front room you've got Bruce. Istanbul stretches over 2 continents, hope you haven't overstretched yourself there...

There's not many posters would travel all that way to try 'em out on behalf of a fellow trotter.

Topkapi on Marylebone High Street is a whole lot closer to you though. And is David Essex' favourite restaurant.

Best Donner ever anywhere? In Toulouse, they make the Naans in a Tandoor in front of you, to order. And its proper meat. Superb.

Never mind restaurants, a Galatasaray home game before they leave their famous Ali Sami Yen Stadium at the end of the season is surely the must do in Istanbul this spring.
It isn't cheap though.Main stand seats if bought in advance are £70, rising to around £100 if bought at the ground on the day. That does include a complimentary, full colour 16 page programme placed on all seats in the main stand.

Bump... So just back... What a place!

Would highly recommended going, not what I'd call pretty but it doesn't take anything away form the place. The Blue Mosque and Dolmabache are particularly impressive. Would definitely recommend going.

Anyhow, didn't manage to get to any of the recommended restaurants, Blackk and Sunset were miles away from our hotel - relatively speaking, after trekking round the sites we didn't fancy schlepping across the city, and Topaz was booked up on the Saturday. Went to a place called 360 on the Friday night, not too traditional but really good food none-the-less.

Saturday night went to a great little place called Pera Sisore (sp?) we found in a book about the backstreet restaurants of Istanbul.
