Cartmel Racing

Post by Lofthouse Lower » Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:36 am

Heading up there on a jolly next week but haven't been racing before.

1) Can you take your own booze in?
2) Can you take your own BBQ in?
3) Is there a dress code?

50p each way 8)

Been a good while wince I've been to Cartmel. There isn't a dress code, but that might stop you getting into the grandstand if you wanted to try that out.

They sell BBQ's (and the meat to cook on 'em) - You can take your own if you want.

Not sure re: booze, I suspect with it being point to point, and the fact that you can take your own barbies/picnic boxes etc. that it shouldn't be a problem.

You can take your own booze to Cartmel, and food, deck chairs, bbq's, bouncy castles, whatever you want - and no dress code either. thats why it attracts coach loads of lads on stag do's who are splatted before they even get there. its just a bit rough, all burger vans and plastic pint pots, fairground rides and arcade machines. Shame really because the setting is well nice. dont get me wrong ive been on them coach loads, and been on my own with the wench too. depends what you want, its good for a lads jolly but probably not the best course for your first experience of the races. you wanna get togged up and Visit Chester Races in the sunshine! Tremendous.

We went last year and had a top day out.

Top tips:

Take a gazebo with you so it doesn't matter if it pishes it down

Take chairs, fold up table, beer and your own bbq

Wellies!!

Get there early ie before 10am to get a place at the side of the track in a decent location not too far from the Tote.

What is point to point? Serious question.

Simply a race from one point to another, regardless of what obstacles are in the way.

It derived from racing steeple to steeple between villages. Nowadays, it's generally round a track :-)

It was usually one "grade" of racing below National Hunt.

Ta... So, it's no longer point to point (steeple to steeple and back?). Just rubbish horses?

This is correct - I did say it had been a good while since I went. Like Plumpton, I thought they used to have point to point meetings too in the 1980's. Didn't realise it had gone all NH when I made the original post.

Absolutely top day out, Cartmel. I'd say that you're best off staying over in a B&B though and having a nosebag at L'enclume (unless you've lost on the nags).
