Long Time Away - would like views
Have been away from Bolton for 20 years and rarely been in town for a pint since. But I'll be over for Wolves game so me and missus and another couple are heading into town for possibly a meal and a few drinks. Any recommendation of where is decent to go?
Looking for a place that is not going to be rammed full of loons for drink - I like the Stella and the odd REAL ale. Would prefer relaxed and contemporary, but open to offers. Used to work in the Swan a long time ago.
As for food anything goes - is there a Mexican anywhere - haven't had one for ages seeing as there are none within 30 mile of me at home...
Cheers

Not really a regular in town myself recently (having lived away for the last 24 years). However I wouldn't recommend the town centre for drinks OR food.

There is nowhere in Bolton town centre to eat anymore, so, problem solved!
Unless you like Indian.
There's a mexican up at Middlebrook though?

Sweet Green Tavern is decent for ale, Old Man & Scythe still do the cloudy cider (also for sale in the Blue Boar). Hen and Chickens is the nicest pub in town, if only for that landlord who's a bit 'Keeping Up Appearances'. The pubs on Churchgate are okay - Capital facing St Peters Church is decent enough.
Avoid Yates's, Elephant & Castle and the Bradshawgate type pubs, none of them are full of football fans (town is dead, even on a match day) but they are full of scrotes.
Although I'd recommend Balmoral if you like doing a bit of charlie-safari

What gives? Although I've lived away for some time I have family back in Bolton and have been in the Town Centre regularly. Can you recommend anywhere decent to eat in town? From Norn Iron?

Sorry Gary, it wasn't a critic of your info - it was a slap to my own head thinking 'God, is it that bad in my lovely old Bolton ' ( rose tinted specs )
Not very good with these icon things, me.
Am undecided whether to do the rounds and reminisce about the Good Old Days around Bradshawgate and show our respective Missuses where we used to hang out or maybe stay up round nice clean sanatised Middlebrook area.
Cheers everyone

Go to the Olympus and have a sit-down fish and chip meal with waiter service. Nice place, excellent service and although it's fish and chips, it's the best for it. Pubs are pubs, take your pick.

Olympus is the only place in Bolton for eating. Unless you're into all you can eat for a tenner chinese buffet's full of wankers or McDonald's.
Bolton is on its arse. Massively. There's literally fvck all to do.

That'll be a chippy then. What a painfully sad reflection on our town that the only place to eat's a chippy.boltonboris wrote:Olympus is the only place in Bolton for eating.

There's that little Italian place. Ciao Napoli? But it's absolutely, vomit inducingly terrible.

Actually, there's that Spanish Tapas place near Ritzy. Went a couple of years ago and the nosebag was pretty good. However, the experience was ruined slightly by peasants that read 'Eat all you like' as 'order more than you can possibly eat, pile in all up in a mound on a plate and make an absolute nice person of yourself'.

What's where tiggi's used to be, anything decent there?
It is sad when I go back and see how it is.

La Salsa? It's ok there, great value for what you get.
I'd avoid the centre and just stay around the Reebok, better food selection and, for pre-match drinks, a pub is a pub.

Even sadder when you think further back to places like The Commercial for a meal and you could pop in the Pack Horse or the Swan Lounge or Wheatsheaf for a drink, better still the Lower Nags. All long gone now.mrkint wrote:What's where tiggi's used to be, anything decent there?

Horwich itself has quite a few decent eateries.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
