Belated sympathy, Bruce. It probably doesn't help, but as we grow older there is an ever increasing risk of experiencing bereavements. I've never been one for having close friendships, more a social circle, but those that did turn up have been, for want of a better word, 'precious' to me. I've run out of close friends now. Bruce, enjoy - nay, revel - in close companionship with those you can share all sorts of stuff you'd never think of discussing with an acquaintance. Chin up, old chap.

Steve Evans who has become somewhat a celebrity on 5Live with Richard Bacon over the last few months has died during the night. He has suffered from stomach cancer over the last 2+yrs but in the last year has been a regular on Bacons show and only on Monday did he give his last interview from his hospital bed in the Midlands when he sounded very weak. I've been following his tweets for the last year or so - very inspiring.

That is a shame, I've heard him on there, a remarkable bloke, RIP.

Sir Chris Chataway, great athlete whose achievements were overshadowed both by other athletes and his own achievements later in life. RIP

RIP indeed. He gave us some great thrills in my adolescent years when athletics were (one believes) drug free and truly amateur.

Aye, Chris Chataway, Chris Brasher and Roger Bannister were all our juvenile heroes. R.I.P to another of them.

Aye, who could forget Brasher and Chataway pacing Bannister to the first four minute mile? Legends all. He was a man of many colours was CC. Athlete, MP, business man - in all of which he apparently excelled. RIP, Sir Chris.

Farewell to Pete Seeger.

Once asked "whether he'd ever sung for communists" by the Un-american Activities Committee...

Probably for having a hand in such rebel songs as We shall overcome and Where have all the flowers gone.

RIP

Sung at many a Communist gathering did Comrade Seeger.

Didn't realise he was in his 90's.

I mustn't be getting any younger. :D

Pretty gutted about big Phil Hoffman. He's been a long time favourite of mine and probably the greatest of his generation!

My dad just told me about this. I'm in total agreement on all counts. Guess I'll be watching a few of his movies in the next week or so.

Indeed, v sad. First thing I saw him in was 25th hour, and once I'd got over how much he looked like Matt Damon 20 years on, I thought he was ace in just about everything I saw him in. Thought he was older than 46.

Very sad, first thing I remember him in was Boogie Nights, unforgettable performance.
Should have had decades of brilliant performances ahead of him.
