Felt mega-clever for the first 5 mins of University Challenge tonight as they asked classics questions. That didn't last long.

Very disappointed by the Turner film. I know we like to congratulate ourselves when we make something that isn't a predictable Hollywood effort, but this one wasn't for me. I found it boring but perhaps it was more subtle than I was in the mood for...

Really sorry to hear that. Was looking forward to it. Timothy Spall is a cracking actor. Played a great part as the photographer in The Last Samurai. Some of the comments baffle me. If people don't like J.M.W.Turner or his paintings, why go and watch a film about his life.? What were they expecting from a man who spent all his life painting pictures, Spartacus?mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Very disappointed by the Turner film. Re: What are you watching tonight?
I thought it was very good, an eye opener into life around the time of the Napoleonic wars. Seemed an authentic slice of life to me. And Turner himself was a character, fluent in grunts and groans by way of communication, and with a special relationship with his housekeeper apparently. All in all I really enjoyed it.TANGODANCER wrote:Really sorry to hear that. Was looking forward to it. Timothy Spall is a cracking actor. Played a great part as the photographer in The Last Samurai. I've watched biopics about people who I had no idea about beforehand (People vs Larry Flynt & The Aviator are two recent examples) and loved them. I also want to see the Turner film and couldn't name a single one of his paintings. I haven't seen any reviews so don't know what these comments that are baffling you are.TANGODANCER wrote:Really sorry to hear that. Was looking forward to it. Timothy Spall is a cracking actor. Re: What are you watching tonight?
They were under a youtube trailer clip B.H. and the word "boring" was well in evidence (hence my comment) I had a look later at Rotten Tomatoes reviews which were much more positive. As one commented: "Never has watching paint dry been so fascinating!".Beefheart wrote:I've watched biopics about people who I had no idea about beforehand (People vs Larry Flynt & The Aviator are two recent examples) and loved them. I'll see it somwhere along the line anyway as I'm a big Turner fan.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Such an annoying cinema habit that one (using a phone, not macing, although I imagine that isn't much fun either). I think people don't realise how distracting it can be, but what's really scary is that these peoples attention spans seem to be so short that they can't sit there and just watch the movie.

What can I say, I like art and walking round galleries but I rarely make note of the artists.bobo the clown wrote:Beefheart wrote:I couldn't name a single one of his paintings.![]()

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Watched "Horns" last night. Very much surprised how decent a film it is. Although I still can't shake the fact the Daniel Radcliffe will always be Harry Potter and his american accent is a bit naff. Also due to him being Harry Potter, it felt weirdly uncomfortable with him saying "Feck" and "Shit" quite a few times in it
The delicious Juno Temple is also in it, my god that woman loves getting her kit of in films!!!

Tomorrow evening - channel 4 - "it was alright in the 70's" - presumably about the casual racism/homophobia/sexism in 70's TV... Sounds mildly interesting...

Re: What are you watching tonight?
I'm a big fan of Mike Leigh (and also a fan of Turner's work) but I saw a trailer for this and it looked staggeringly boring and tedious. Very far removed from explosive earlier work, such as Naked and Secrets and Lies. I reckon I'll give it a miss.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Very disappointed by the Turner film. Tonight I'm watching a film called Werkmeister Harmonies by a director called Bela Tarr.

Just bailed out of watching 'War Horse'. I should've gone with my instincts and done so after the first 5 mins, but in the interest of appeasing Mrs H, I stuck it out for an hour or so, but couldn't take it any longer. Utter claptrap.
Hope is what keeps us going.

Also, yesterday, saw 'Mr Turner'. Assuming the birs I missed when I fell asleep (twice) didn't contain all the exciting bits it was unmitigatingly dull, plodding and ponderous. To be fair the cinematography was to class and the maid deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress but overall it was very missable. For probably the first time I saw Timothy Spall priduce a truly poor performance. His Turner was a cimplete copy of his Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter films. All flickering eyes and grunts.
All in al a poor show.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Started watching that Peaky Blinders yesterday. Rather enjoyable.
Not convinced by the music. Or Cillian Murphy's accent. And Sam Neill clearly watched a lot of Ian Paisley. And Churchill looks like tubes from Soccer AM.
Still, i'm carrying on.
