Re: Today I'm angry about.....
When/if you find the answer, General, would you let me know? You'd tend to think that Sharia law etc, would apply mainly amongst the strong Muslim citadels in the Eastern part of the world and have little relevance in the West. A month or two ago my wife was in conversion with a taxi driver of Asian descent on her way home from Asda. When he made the remark, "Things will be different when we have full Sharia law here" she was quite shocked. She didn't bother arguing with him and changed the subject, but it makes you wonder a little.General Mannerheim wrote:forgive me for trying to over simplify things like this... but these Islamic extremists, what is their ultimate agenda? i understand that this school attack was a revenge mission for some other shit, and other attacks are in retaliation or an expression of hate toward western society in ongoing conflict etc, but what do these people want at the end of the day to make them happy and peaceful? if Paxman had a sit down with Mohammed Omar and asked him the question - would it be that they just want their own state under Sharia law, or would they not rest until they achieve world domination and everyone on the planet has either converted to Islam or lost their head!?

Power. They oppress people to gain power and a key factor in this is to deny proper education. The Taliban don't want women to get an education, keep 'em thick as they're easier to control that way.General Mannerheim wrote:forgive me for trying to over simplify things like this... but these Islamic extremists, what is their ultimate agenda? i understand that this school attack was a revenge mission for some other shit, and other attacks are in retaliation or an expression of hate toward western society in ongoing conflict etc, but what do these people want at the end of the day to make them happy and peaceful? if Paxman had a sit down with Mohammed Omar and asked him the question - would it be that they just want their own state under Sharia law, or would they not rest until they achieve world domination and everyone on the planet has either converted to Islam or lost their head!?

Just because it isn't in the Daily Mail every day, that doesn't mean that local Imam's aren't working hard to stop the radicalism of young people. I know for a fact that they are.

It makes me wonder just what the majority of people actually think about that topic. That's why it makes me wonder, because I don't know, just as I don't know the answer to the general's question. We're Catholic and C of E, not Muslims, why should we have Sharia law here? Do you know?William the White wrote:What does it make you wonder about?TANGODANCER wrote:When/if you find the answer, General, would you let me know? Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I think there's an easy answer to that... The majority of people don't want Sharia law. We shouldn't have it. Most muslim countries don't have it either. Or want it. I expect the taxi driver was more devout than most.TANGODANCER wrote:It makes me wonder just what the majority of people actually think about that topic. Re: Today I'm angry about.....
We shouldn't. We shouldn't have any laws that favour the moral code of any particular religion, to the detriment of the freedoms of non-believers. It's fair to say that we have a fairly secular society, despite C of E Bishops being in the House of Lords yet the Church maintaining a tax exempt status or the fact that humanist weddings have been relegated to the status of a 'fringe issue'. Either way, the government is currently the greatest threat to civil liberties which are being eroded under the guise of preventing terrorism or 'won't somebody please think of the children' obscenity bullshit like these new bizarre porn laws.thebish wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:

Well, since I was speaking of myself and wife, ( I'm Catholic, she's C of E) I'd imagine not?thebish wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:

ahhh - you were asking why you and your wife should have sharia law "here" (in your house?) - sorry! - the "we" sounded much more general to me!TANGODANCER wrote:Well, since I was speaking of myself and wife, ( I'm Catholic, she's C of E) I'd imagine not?thebish wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I'll preface this with, "there are far more learned scholars than me on this, but"
My interpretation is that while the New Testament is a collection of stories from different Human viewpoints about the man himself JC, the Qu'ran is the absolute word of God sent through his messenger Muhammed. While interpretation of Christianity can evolve somewhat and has figureheads on Earth who lead change in the church, or simply reacts to public sentiment as at the moment with the Pope, this isn't as possible with Islam as it's holy texts are the word of God and that's it. Therefore it's 'easier' for those extreme passages to be taken and basically run with compared to the ease of disregarding some of the more unpleasant one-liners in the Bible. Some of these mention Holy War, converting the unbelievers by force and all the horrible stuff we hear trotted out by IS.
Unusually for the internet I welcome critique

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
There are many different theological schools within Islam, and many different interpretations of Islamic jurisprudence.
The Q'ran has different interpretations and commentaries.
There are contending schools of thought on the significance of the hadith (sayings of the prophet).
Islam is not monolithic in that sense - not all believers believe exactly the same thing.
So, while the Q'ran is seen as the literal word of God as revealed to his messenger, there remains the problem of interpreting it.
It certainly contains things that in the 7th century were liberal and humane and progressive but now seem reactionary and barbaric. The amputation of a hand for theft, for instance - in England the sentence was death until the 19th century.

so if we/they/whoever gave them their own state with nobody there except conformists and a load of willing oppressed women, they'd leave everyone else alone?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Power. Re: Today I'm angry about.....
It'd be idiotic for us to generalise about Muslims, in the same way as it would for any other religion with its different sects.
I used to have an Algerian lad work for me ( a muslim, as it happens I had several muslims, three Jews, 7 South American Catholics and a Buddhist working for me simultaneously at the time. And no fatalities, remarkably) who beckoned me over to look at the paper. He was pointing to a picture and an article about (as I recall) some sect of Sunni muslims who believe in cutting their heads in some kind of ritual. I'm paraphrasing here, but the sentiment was generally "look at this bunch of bellends, what kind of moron does that for their religious beliefs, the halfwits".
Now, as unpalatable as this may be to some in a black and white world, he was a muslim commenting on other muslims who believed something different to him. I apologise profusely for shattering many an illusion. Or not. Probably.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

My bad, they were Shi'ite. All muslims being all the same an all that I don't suppose it matters.

So just to make sure that we have got this right, you are saying its wrong to generalise about people and then illustrate this with an example involving 7 people, which then encompasses everyone else in the world.Lord Kangana wrote:It'd be idiotic for us to generalise about Muslims, in the same way as it would for any other religion with its different sects.
