Last two weekends have been the start of the training for next summer's ultra. Last weekend was xc race on the Saturday followed by a 4 & a half walk with the dog over Winter hill on the Sunday.

Today was the Rivington half marathon, the furthest I've raced in over2 years. I decided to try and take it easy and just concentrate on getting round in one piece but before long I was thinking I had to make sure I came in under 2 hours. I managed it, just. About 1.55 but God I feel sore now.

It's alright lads - I'll take one for the team and do the PR on my own ;)

Haven't ran in two weeks so 38 seconds outside last time's PB could have been a lot worse.

Andy Walker donned a Bolton shirt once again on Sunday, as he raised awareness of the Burnden Park Disaster by completing the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon.

Walker, who represented Wanderers between 1991 and 1994, was one of more than 30,000 people to take part in the annual event in Glasgow, where he posted a time of 1:52:19.

The only celeb I met when I did that race in 2000 was Sir James Savile!

There's a lot to be said for this sobriety business. I'm as miserable as feck but I'm running faster. ;)

27 seconds?? blimey - like sh*t off a stick!! :D

That's a HUGE amount to slice off a 5k Bruce. Well done sir.

My full on weekend was, as anticipated, tiring to say the least.

1500 metres in the pool on Friday was the warm up to the main event ot the tri relays on Saturday morning.

Basically teams of 3 compete against each other for the fastest time.

Each team member takes it in turns to swim, bike and then run around Dorney Lake (the Olympic Rowing Venue.

I did my 400m swim in 9:56, Cycle (15k) in 29:29 and my run in 23:28 all including transitions. Happy with everything apart from my run. My left knee just doesn't like pace at the moment.

Sunday I had a 10k run near home. I decided I would pace my (new to running) missus around the course. Disaster nearly struck on the downhill start as I couldn't run without shooting pains across my knee. I had to ease right off until I got to the bottom of the hill and on the flat. After that It was largely fine and I managed to improve my wife's time by over 3 minutes on her previous (and only other) 10k.

So (mostly) a good weekend all round but I need to get my knee looked at again.

:?

Okay so two consultants later (one musculoskeletal and one physiotherapy) it has been decided that the key issue of my knee pain is my gluteus medius and my I.T. band.

Basically I have a congenital hip defect which is exacerbated by an underdeveloped glute. med.

It causes my right hip to drop when I place my left foot and creates stress on my IT band, destabilising my knee. The consultant physio has now given me resistance exercises and told me to scale right back on the running (not what I wanted to hear at the start of my Ironman training but it can't be helped. My other consultant nearly had a fit when I told her about the other weekend. :D ).

On the plus side he said my gait and footfall is near perfect and is confident, with exercise, I can build up the glute med. within a few months which in turn will take the pressure off the IT band so that I will be able to run without pain.

Feeling a lot more confident about my rehab now and will make sure I do the exercises.

good luck to you mate - you've had some really irritating issues at key moments... I hope this time they've got to the bottom of it.. it must be so frustrating to build up your fitness - then lose it all in rehab - then build it up again - then be told to ease off again... :?

feck me, just did my first run in a while, parkrun at Roundhay Park leeds. 3 and a bit laps with a massive hill. The extra bit of a lap happens to be on the hill, and you alse finish at the top of the bastard. Overall I think the finish made it tougher than Bolton, but all on tarmac so a quicker surface. Went off too fast like a dick and had some serious chestburn at the finish and a sneezing fit, but it's all good because none of my injuries reared their ugly heads.
