Just started watching the first episode Boardwalk Empire, slightly disappointed by the costumes/settings so far doesn't quite match up to say once upon a time in america which is set in the same period, but really enjoying it, and Michael Kenneth Williams has just appeared!

Last episode of Hatfields and McCoys tonight. Have to see it out. Can't be many of either left now since they've spent four episodes wiping each other out.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Stick with it Beefy, I'm sure you'll revise that opinion although I seem to recall I was hooked on Boardwalk from the off

The comparison was only with regard to costumes and setting. It just looked to clean in Boardwalk, like it was set in some part of Disney Land that was supposed to be in the 1920's. I'll definitely be watching some more.

Question Time. Owen Jones brilliant. Iain Duncan Smith abysmal.

This is, obviously, an objective assessment...

Joaquin Phoenix magnificent. Hoffman very good. Script hasn't made its mind up what the film is about.

Mostly it is concerned with a cult in 1950s America, The Cause, which is clearly based on Scientology.

Phoenix is the alcoholic, traumatised survivor of World War 2, who stumbles on the cult and is 'rescued' by the Master (Hoffman), self proclaimed genius who makes it his mission to take charge of Phoenix's character, to thus rescue him from himself...

He sometimes approaches 'success' but it is always tenuous, always provisional, always under threat... and, indeed, imho, it is hard to care anywhere. It's not easy to find sympathy or empathy with either character. There is a lack of clarity in the story, and therefore a lack of tension in the film. It feels flabby and uncentred.

Good music, good photography, good acting, poor story telling. Three stars.
I agree wholeheartedly with that review.
Just seen it, thought it was stunning, I think, need to sleep on it...

yep, brilliant. Hoffman has been my favourite actor for ages and he galvanised it here. I jumped out of my seat when helost his temper at the follower lady questioning his methods in his 2nd book! incredible.

Joaquin Phoenix gotta be up for the Oscar for this too?

Watched last part of Hatfields and McCoys. To say it was a fxckin' anti-climax doesn't truly express just how hurt I am.

I need to see this. I love Philip Seymour Hoffman, not sure he's my favourite actor but every film I see him in I'm just more impressed. He just seems so versatile, with his roles in Happiness, Doubt, Charlie Wilsons' War, Moneyball, Flawless all being completely different. (I haven't seen many of his other films, didn't rate The Boat that Rocked).

He always seems dislikeable in a smarmy way to me (moneyball, The talented Mr. Ripley).. Which probably shows he's a good actor in fairness.

He's been in most PTA films and is brilliant in em all, esp Boogie Nights. All those mentioned above plus magnolia, punch-drunk-love, 25th hour, the voice Max in the incredible Mary & Max, Also Capote, Doubt, honourary mention for big lebowski and i know it's a dodgy film but i thought he was ace in Along came Polly!

Been in a few stinkers too mind.

Owen Jones is responsible for - Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class. What utter bollocks! It's a bit like saying - Bullingdon Club: Every Tory is a privately educated snob!

He's ace, but every time I see him I can't help thinking: Matt Damon at fifty.
