Perhaps i should stick to running...

Re: The athletics/running thread

Did a 6 miler tonight on the roads. Hilly & slippy. I had a hope that I could do London in 3.45. If tonights anything to go by though, I'm going to struggle to break 4 hours.

Give yourself a break! Londons not especially hilly and nor is it likely to be slippy in April. You'll be fine, a way to go yet til the big day. Besides, 4 hours is flipping fast anyway!Harry Genshaw wrote:![]()

Not when you do 4:01:49

I'm with you HG. Just back from a brief gluteal hiatus I am stepping back on the Marathon trail first thing tomorrow. I was up to 14 miles but obviously have to start again(ish).

I'm aiming for sub 3:45, yes. I think GH is a faster shorter distance runner and I'm just the same pace throughout!

How far are you running tomorrow then? Getting back into it nice and easy? Is it icy in Enfield? Be careful! I know what you old men are like, thinking you can do more then you can.... Don't want you breaking a leg!

I'm doing 4 to 6 miles easy along the New River from Lea Valley leisure centre. Flat. If that's okay I'll look to do 3 or four short(ish) runs next week to get ready for a longer run next weekend.

How is the piriformis by the way? I've been back playing football after the problem this week after 3 weeks off. Bit of a strange injury, and can still feel it tight at times, but it's way easier than it was a few weeks ago. Problem I found was gaining much sympathy, trying to explain that you're missing games because your arse is a bit sore and it was making your leg a bit sore as well!

The pain has receded but I haven't tested it yet. We'll see tomorrow. What treatment did you use Jimbo?
For me I did the first 48 hours with ice and anti-inflammateries. I was stretching the muscles (mainly small glute stretches). I also had some ultrasound (a bit weird having your buttock in spasm but hey ho!)
After a week I stopped the Ibuprofen (other anti-inflammatries are available) and just stretched and rolled it on a foam roller to massage it. It's good for calf and quad muscle too, to dissipate lactic acid. (see below). More ultrasound on Tuesday and now the pain is virtually gone.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I just had stretching, ice and ibuprofen. Lucky enough to be working in orthopaedics at the moment with plenty of access to physios and specialists. Gradually built it up with some swimming and now am back to football. Did mine differently to yours though, which I'm guessing was due to overuse and running. Mine was trauma direct to the area as a result of a heavy fall onto a frozen football pitch, so all I was waiting for was the swelling in the muscle to go down so it would stop impingeing on the sciatic nerve and stop giving me grief down the leg whenever I stretched it.

Re: The athletics/running thread
ok - went for my second swimming session today - different pool (cheaper - but the locker keeps your 20p!!! - bastard!)
rant 1: OK fattie triplets - by all means swim up and down lengths - that's the idea - but not all three of you in line ploughing over everyone in front of you because you are not looking where you are going!!
rant 2. it is adult swimming - not "adult" as in the entertainment industry - it is no the time for mooning about petting in the middle of the pool getting in everyone's way - yes, I mean you, mr slack-jawed sideburns - and your giant tattoed g/f!
rant 3: why does everyone just get in my way!!! yes - I mean you in particular - old man hairy!! the idea is not to close your eyes and zig-zag wildly up and down the pool not looking where you are going!! I find it hard enough with my multitask deficiency to get my legs and arms working together and get a rhythm going without keep having to stop for you!!
anyway - i think i did a bit better today on the b/stroke - concentrated on getting my leg-action right - I think I have worked out that in the past it was not tadpoley enough!! did some lengths with just legs - and was good - but then went a bit to shoite when I added arms...! still - baby steps - I'm just a bit crap!
also - remembered the goggles (didn't buy a hat!) - so got some crawl lengths in too .
attire: similar problems to GG... I decided that Hornchurch is not ready for my budgie-smugglers - so donned my old paternity mankini - however I am not as big as I used to be - so I flashed my meat and onions at the fee-paying public... won't be welcome back there again....
