It's a bit like prostitution really. They should be made to pay the VAT on the money you've spent on them. Otherwise, make dating in its current format illegal.
And just how many times has this been successful for you?

There are, I'm told by female friends, a number of their mates currently out dating who go purely to save on the shopping bill and to have a nice meal at someone else's expense. For that reason, I'd always advise the 1 hour 'interview over coffee' before committing to dinner (and losing out on the hand job obviously).

It's very odd that he didn't offer to pay half. It's also odd that your friend offered to pay the whole thing.Bijou Bob wrote:Right chaps (And ladies) I'd appreciate your thoughts on this:
A female friend of mine went out on a first date on Saturday night. The guy bought a round of drinks in the pub, from where they went to a little bistro for something to eat. At the end of the meal, he let her pay the bill.
Now for me, he should at least have offered to go Dutch, but no, he let her pay for the lot. Is it just me being old fashioned about this or should he at least have offered to pay half?
Maybe he decided he didn't like her, didn't want a second date and had nothing to lose by letting her pay when she made her strange offer?
Anyway, I have always been a payer. Whatever the modern economic realities are, traditional practice and old fashioned manners are deeply enough entrenched for it still to feel very weird not to. Perhaps this will wear off, in time.

And it will. Bit like how a century or two ago most folk, went to Church every Sunday, not cos they wanted to in some cases, but cos it was the "done thing".
It wears out, as things change.

Re: General Chit Chat
Insane, I think that in many communities the 'going to church on Sunday' was as much a social occasion as a celebration of the Sabbath (thebish might disagree with me on this point). My feeling is that, due to the lack of mobility of most families, any activity outside working hours tended to be local. Many of those activities were church based although not necessarily of a religious nature. Sporting teams, dramatic societies, literary gatherings, choral groups and their like were often founded under the umbrella of a church. Even BWFC is stated to have had its roots nurtured in such a manner - Christ Church was it not?
I must admit that brass bands tended to be 'works' based. Anyway, I digress.![Smile ](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: General Chit Chat
Come on Dujon. You know it was rock and roll that changed the "going to church" lifestyle. Till 1952 we still had sheet music and few records. Along came Bill Haley and co and changed the attitude of the younger generation totally. We got more freedom than ever before and church socials were out, so was the church as a social gathering place generally. We started it and subsequent generations ripped the arse out of it. Church life has never been quite the same since. ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I do think economic realities will play a role in it wearing off both for me and society. If my girlfriend is on the West End or television, then I suspect she'll be paying for more things. Likewise, as women approach income equality with men, an obvious differential in spending power between men and women on dates will become less common.
