To drag this discussion back to its original point, if we want phrases that wind me up, how about "The exception that proves the rule" (Sorry, LK!) - "proves" here is meant to be used in its older sense of "tests". The exception can then be said to show that the rule is false.
Which makes a lot more sense...
And don't get me started on "lies, damn lies and statistics", most often used these days by non-numerate fcukwits...
