This was just before we scored. Here's the after picture.
It was the reserve team against Wolves btw.

I cheat and use Acrylics, according to my art teacher acrylics are now far better than they used to be and you can almost get as rich a colour as oils (oils still better), have loads of acrylics so still using them up, plan to try oils one day.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Nice. I like looking at painting copies of oil paintings, themselves painted in oil, as it helps you to understand the original better.
Did you prime the canvas at all first, Raven? Or just work directly onto the white? Can you talk us through some of the challenges you encountered, if you can be arsed?!
You may be interested to know that there is a whole 'Turner and the Sea' exhibition on until April at the National Maritime Museum. http://www.rmg.co.uk/about/press/turner-and-the-sea" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I noticed last week that the Temeraire was not in its usual place, and this is why.
Main challenges were more with me not giving up, still not happy with horizon line and getting the smoke from the chimney, prefer painting now on bigger canvases though, the main boat was difficult and easy to over paint and mess up so left as is, same with the water and reflections, still learning a lot but slowly getting better (I hope), must be doing something right as in the framers someone asked if it was for sail
Maritime museum on my list of places to visit, not been there for some time
My dog (proper 57) had his anal glands emptied once and yes the smell is something to behold!!

...quite an accolade, in this particular case!Raven wrote:Main challenges were more with me not giving up, still not happy with horizon line and getting the smoke from the chimney, prefer painting now on bigger canvases though, the main boat was difficult and easy to over paint and mess up so left as is, same with the water and reflections, still learning a lot but slowly getting better (I hope), must be doing something right as in the framers someone asked if it was for sail
I think the main boat looks good - the perspective depends on its being slightly 'unresolved'.
Did you try thinning the paint for the smoke?

I like the water, Tango. There is no doubt the water is doing what it should.
I am, however, concerned that the boat porn going on was unintended. The big one mounting the smaller boat has 'attitude'.

The bigger one's moored on a ramp diagonally to the one in front, hence the dark area under itLost Leopard Spot wrote:I like the water, Tango. There is no doubt the water is doing what it should.

Re: The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)
Aye, not easy at all. The originals aren't as bad as they show here. Watercolour painting has a lot of layers and taking pics with flash with ordinary cameras tends to darken some areas because of paint depth. Does that make sense?thebish wrote:hard indeed - which is why spotty won't paint his missus*!! I'll have a look on youtube for some portrait lessons, there'll probably be something around.

Is that Vince Vaughn in your painting, Tango? A splendid likeness.

Gee thanks Bruce. (It's Humphrey Bogart) Thought Casablanca might have given it away.Bruce Rioja wrote:Is that Vince Vaughn in your painting, Tango? A splendid likeness.

Tried a couple more film posters. Second is for our concealed sniper hiding in the long grass with his Martini Henry.
