And furthermore, furthermore, I wasn't saying that some White South Africans can't be racist, because that concept would be truly stupid. But I did try to point out that some blacks can be equally racist.

And furthermore, furthermore furthermore. What difference does it make how much I've had to drink. Alcohol doesn't alter my opinions, it just perverts the ability I have to express them correctly.

(and furthermore, if you'd like to go back and read my post, it was pretty obvious that my question was thrust at pencilbiter. It wasn't some generalised query, it was a sarcastic semi-rhetorical question aimed at the proginator of the twisted concept under discussion).
in that case - you need an emoticon - them's the internet rules (easily forgotten when drunk...)
maybe Mummy's question was also bitingly sarcastic and rhetorical.... how would we know without an emoticon?
if you can't trust yourself to play chess when pissed - then i suggest you refrain from trying to make a serious point on a football forum when pissed - you'll only cock it up big-time...
furthermore... what take on the Palestine-Israeli dichotomy would that be that you are farting on about???

Re: Nelson Mandela RIP
Personally I found Pencilbiter's question odd and assumed he was serious because he added "serious question" not an emoticon. I was surprised because Pencilbiter generally poses question that are not crass generalizations. I have not met Desmond Tutu but I have met Mandela and I doubt, whatever he may have been, that he was a racist then. I have also met a few black South African students in our master of law (LLM) program and they seem fairly non-racist in their views. Of course one cannot tell what people may really think but to suggest all South Africans, white or black, are one thing or another strikes me as simplistic - more simplistic that I would expect from Mummy based on many years reading his posts.

How can a question be a generalisation of any sort? And PB's is specific.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Personally I found Pencilbiter's question odd and assumed he was serious because he added "serious question" not an emoticon. May the bridges I burn light your way
Re: Nelson Mandela RIP
I didn't find it crass or offensive. Particularly if the guy lives in London where there is an enclave of embittered South African exiles. I think LLS's outrage is a little misplaced.Bruce Rioja wrote:How can a question be a generalisation of any sort? Re: Nelson Mandela RIP
Apologies - I had had a few too many on Wednesday night and I only half remember asking that question now! Not my usual style, perhaps.
It was just that I was thinking of the South Africans I have met (I have never met any black South Africans) and then it occurred to me what a bad experience I have had with that admittedly crudely identified group. My sample includes ex-pats in London, some students at Cambridge, some professional golfers, some university golf teams from Stellenbosch and Pretoria, and some randomly encountered tourists (one particular dad leading his family around Bruges sticks in my mind). I have never been to Africa, so none of these encounters happened on their home turf.
Almost all of them (I have now thought of exceptions) were boorish and unpleasant people and I was genuinely interested to hear how other people's experiences differ from or accord with mine.
I am often guilty of making (or thinking) generalisations, but I'm not too hard on myself, because I tend to respond quickly to any evidence that the prejudgement is misplaced.

Brilliant.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Nelson Mandela RIP
I know quite a few South African men. I'd say they are more sexist then racist (as a generalisation.) Though they do all moan that its very hard for white people to get jobs in SA now. Whether that's true or not I have no idea.
