Re: What are you watching tonight?
I agree the books were great. Fiction is about entertaining and both books did that well. Da Vinci Code however, didn't make a good film (wife bought me the D.V.D and I was so looking forward to it). I watched a programme on the making of the film and the staggering lengths they went to should have produced a blockbuster. They actually built the Louvre in Pinewood studios and re-created all the art works in it. It just didn't work somehow. In that genre, The Lost Symbol is probably next. That, for me was a let down as a book, and his latest, Inferno, even worse (it's utter tripe). I love the genre but the last two books fail to inspire. Just can't see them as films.hi there, i'm chris wrote:I love them both. Really underrated. Found it really disappointing. Having heard so much about the book I had really high hopes for it. Left the cinema wishing that I'd read the book instead.TANGODANCER wrote: Da Vinci Code however, didn't make a good film

The book's still a good read if you haven't already read it Bruce. Very good actually, if you can put the film out of your mind.Bruce Rioja wrote:Found it really disappointing. I watched the BBC4 discussion of the Booker Shortlist (decision tomorrow I think) The panel seemed to think it was not a hugely successful shortlist apart from Toibin's 'Testament of Mary' and Crace's 'Harvest'.
Of the two they raved at the Toibin - but thought its length (novella rather than full length) might work against it.

Enjoyed it for a bit but thought it got a bit silly and was put off by the Teabing bit which wouldn't have looked out of place in a Scooby Doo cartoon. The film was awful and inane, especially the contrived way they walked around explaining things to each other for the benefit of the audience like Basil Exposition in Austin Powers.

If you just want an enjoyable fictional read without getting involved in a theology debate (it's a well known fact that arging about religion is as futile as trying to get agreement on a Wanderers starting XI) then yes, it definitely is.thebish wrote:^ no it's not, Bruce!TANGODANCER wrote:The book's still a good read if you haven't already read it Bruce. ^ Well, thanks for your views, chaps. However, until the situation whereby I find I have plenty of books and not enough reading time reverses then I'll just have to make do with having seen the film.

Crimewatch.......about Madeline McCann........
Re: What are you watching tonight?
Actually can't say I enjoyed the book. Did love reading the symbolism and it's origins but found the story telling which started off fine but ended up closer to the absurd, and as a result I started flipping through to the next bit involving symbolism. A shame really because the basic story was quite fascinating regardless of how fictional the story may have been.TANGODANCER wrote:If you just want an enjoyable fictional read without getting involved in a theology debate (it's a well known fact that arging about religion is as futile as trying to get agreement on a Wanderers starting XI) then yes, it definitely is.thebish wrote:^ no it's not, Bruce!TANGODANCER wrote:The book's still a good read if you haven't already read it Bruce. Struggled to watch it. Heartbreaking. What an earth they were thinking leaving them alone is beyond me. Especially after being asked by Madeline where they were when her and her brother were crying the night before. Poor little girl.Annoyed Grunt wrote:Crimewatch.......about Madeline McCann........

Been to see Sunshine on Leith. It's one of the frothiest, soppiest, cheesiest, cheeriest, laugh, cry, face ache from grinning, most enjoyable films I've seen. Loved it.

I can't comment on how it compares to the book as I haven't read it but as a stand alone film I think it's very good, as are most films with Tom Hanks in it.TANGODANCER wrote:I agree the books were great. Currently watching The Frozen Ground. Too early to comment on it other than Alaska looks stunning as it always does in films. All films should be filmed there.

Have you seen 'Into The Wild'? Worth a watch, both uplifting and depressing and with a great soundtrack by Eddie Vedder.hi there, i'm chris wrote:

mixed emotions about that film, loved it at first until i read up on it to discover it only loosely replicates the facts, and witholds a few important truths.LeverEnd wrote:Have you seen 'Into The Wild'? I have, and that was the main film I had in mind. It is very good, despite the lead character occasionally being an utter douche.LeverEnd wrote:Have you seen 'Into The Wild'? Worth a watch, both uplifting and depressing and with a great soundtrack by Eddie Vedder.hi there, i'm chris wrote:

And yes the soundtrack is great. Not a huge fan of Pearl Jam myself but the film led me to checking out Eddie Vedder's solo material.
