it's athletic and sporty girls like Adlington who by their profession go out of their way to make non-sporty girls hate themselves and feel inadequate...

Myabe, and probably it comes from being in the public eye too. If I was famous, I might start wearing makeup and dressing in something other then jeans and a hoody in an vague attempt to look far more attractive then I do now. To be fair, she (Rebecca) did decide to do the show so my sympathy is somewhat limited and she has a lovely body anyway but I don't think its all women who make each other feel like this. I wonder if the comments she had were from men or women. I still bet mostly men.thebish wrote:Gooner Girl wrote: Was hard last night to see someone who has actually done something with her life and achieved a tremendous amount (I'm thinking Rebecca here, not Lucy) feel lesser then a beauty model and to be moved to tears by the abuse she gets because she doesn't look a certain way. Her body has done amazing things for her yet still there's taunts from pig ignorant blokes who are shallow and only think with what they have got between their legs. Makes me cross.
blame blokes all you like - but I still think that the greater part of this pressure that women feel to look a certain way actually comes from other women...

nahhh - most of the pressure comes from women... pop along to a newsagents and have a look at all the women's magazines and the type of looks/body features in women that they promote...
women mostly dress up and buy matching bags and wear makeup because they are conscious of other women judging them. most men don't give a toss what shade of lippy you have on or whether your bag matches your boots or if you wore the same dress last week... really...
there is a tiny minority of lads-mag "men" - but they haven't grown up yet and if Adlington is phased by immature teenage fantasies - she needs her head examining...
I have managed to avoid feeling bad about myself when adverts show men with a full head of hair and abdominal six-packs - I don't know any men who judge themselves badly in comparison to that kind of stuff... yet I know LOADS of women who do...

Re: What are you watching tonight?
That's just as well as I never wear lipstick and I don't own any posh bags (unless you count my Arsenal boot bag?) I will disprove your theory as i don't care what other women think of me that way much, if they are my friends they love me as i am, i'd care more about what men thought, but even then not enough to have to wear make up. Doesn't mean I am happy with my appearance though, far from it, and if I had the time I would straighten my hair every day as I don't like it all annoyingly long and wavy.thebish wrote:

^ yes - I know all that. but you cannot base a theory about what makes women so insecure about their bodies/lives on the experience of just one woman...

Nor can you generalise based on a few of the women you knowthebish wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:That's just as well as I never wear lipstick and I don't own any posh bags (unless you count my Arsenal boot bag?) Re: What are you watching tonight?
well - watching my daughter grow up - I can only (seriously) suggest that the biggest pressures on her have come from other girls and women...Gooner Girl wrote:

women may SAY they dress for men - but actually they don't - men who can spot that a bag matches shoes and give a monkeys if it does or doesn't - they are few and far between..
women don't like to say it - but they are (you excepted, if you like) in general VERY competitive with one another over looks/dress/babies/bringing up children/... men compete with each other over other things - and so are not that bothered by the disparity between the men in glossy adverts and their own mirror-reflection..
I'm not the only one to think that women obsessively/excessively judge one another and are not the "sisters together" they often like to think they are..

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Iirc Adlington got some stick for her appearance from Frankie Boyle on twitter. I imagine that would have lowered her self esteem some what.

Yes, farting, burping and being good at computer games ARE vital life skills and key if you're going to attract a mate.thebish wrote:well - watching my daughter grow up - I can only (seriously) suggest that the biggest pressures on her have come from other girls and women...Gooner Girl wrote:

He's nasty. Yet she is the one with the Olympic gold medals and he is a loser. She has every reason to feel better about herself then he does. she has many reasons to feel good about herself - so why doesn't she? (genuine question)

Because whatever her achievements she's still defined by some by the way she looks. People know that's the way to hurt someone so they go for it.
There's no point calling Frankie Boyle and ugly ginger missing third Proclaimer cause he doesn't care.
Re: What are you watching tonight?
indeed... but that only scratches the surface... given her achievements - why does Adlington care what a model on I'm a celebrity looks like - or what some ginger tosspot says about her who makes a name for himself by being offensive?Gary the Enfield wrote:thebish wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:He's nasty. the answer is - of course - (i suppose) - personality type... My missus is VERY conscious of what others think of her and will take almost anything personally if it is possible.... I (on the other hand) fall off the scale on the other end and tend to assume that if someone has a problem with how I look or what i do it is because they are somehow mentally deficient..
this might sound sexist - but I think women are more likely to have a similar personality type to my missus than men are (in very broad brush general terms) - which is why I am constantly surprised at how cruel and nasty and judgemental women ARE to each other...
who are the cruellest and most damaging and cutting hurtful people to girls in the playground at at secondary school? other girls - hands down... they learn it early...

Grown men that play computer games do so because they can't down a pint in under five seconds, the bunch of tossers.Gooner Girl wrote: Yes, farting, burping and being good at computer games ARE vital life skills and key if you're going to attract a mate.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
As said above. She is the one with 2 Olympic gold and 2 bronze medals. Why spend time getting upset about what someone that is essentially jealous of her success says or thinks. She needs to grow a thick skin, ignore them and get over it.
Some people spend waaayyyy too much time worrying about what others think of them, to the detriment of themselves and usually those around them too.

5 seconds is quite a high threshold though, don't you think?Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Grown men that play computer games do so because they can't down a pint in under five seconds, the bunch of tossers.Gooner Girl wrote: Yes, farting, burping and being good at computer games ARE vital life skills and key if you're going to attract a mate.
