It's nuts isn't it?! By all means employers should take reasonable steps to accommodate this sort of thing, let them do a job that doesn't involve handling this stuff if there is one, but if you're on a till, that's the job!

I don't know in this case, but usually this kind of shit doesn't come from the people it's 'protecting' but some middle-aged right-on lunatic who thinks this shows he's open-minded, modern and 'with it'.

Could I for instance, refuse to serve a Muslim customer Halal meat, if I didn't agree with the slaughtering process?

I don't see why not.

Do you serve much Halal meat in your day-to-day occupation?

Christmas shop today. Why in a 15 minute journey radius of me is there only 1 big supermarket for a medium sized town plus numerous surrounding villages? Carnage at Sainsbury's today. Do people have to dawdle round the aisles? Grrrr. On the plus side however, i have now had my first Cadbury's Creme Egg of the season...

No, not at all.. Just in case I have a career change, I'd want to know my working rights to get away with doing the job that I'm paid to do, without getting the sack

I don't think to could refuse to serve halal meat to Muslims, but you could refuse to serve halal meat. Unless you were an employee, in which case you could refuse to serve it as long as your employer was a right-on nutter.

Its the perfect protest then. When you return to work, ask to see the boss, and explain to him calmly that from now on youi won't be handling Halal meat on moral grounds. He can't say no. You won't have to sell any Halal meat. Not that you had to anyway, but thats not the point, is it?

it's all utter bollox. if you agree to work in a supermarket - then you agree to handle whatever goods that supermarket sells. If you decide to run a B&B then you abide by all relevant legislation and cannot refuse to offer your service to gay people. simple.

Oh, and M&S is definitely posh. Not like aristocratic, they'd buy all their shit from a farmer, but proper middle-class which is obvs what Dan meant. A lovely treat, but its dear!

Did M&S actually tell any of their staff they could refuse to serve people? Because that's what the Telegraph has printed, but it's not in any of the direct quotes.

What an absurd mountain out of a molehill. The comments on the M&S Facebook page are an amusing (if somewhat terrifying) read today.

Are you calling me and Bobo aristocratic? 8)

By the way, I tried to get a Duchy of Cornwall Gressingham Duck for crimbo at Sainsbury's, and they're not stocking them this year. Pah, they've gone right downmarket, plebs.
That's not a leopard!

But the leftie-liberal BBC seems to indicate not:

One person did refuse, but it wasn't due to any policy, just a cock-up it seems.

Nosense, Pecilbiter. I now know as an EFF AY CEE TEE FACT that M&S are taking the profits from my spend on sugared almonds, Orpale Grand Cru 2002 Vintage Champagne and cotton rich socks to fund the Taliban.
