Owen Smith has branded himself the “normal” candidate for the party leadership because he has a “wife and three kids”. (no coincidence that his pre-contest rival is lesbian then...)) the way Eagle has been using 'northern' to mean 'down to earth' (so what?
), but yes it did come across very badly.
Eagles' "Look, I'm northern, me, so vote for me..." IS cringingly embarassing...

apart from the fact that nobody said that.... it's never a good idea to allow your virulent opposition to ONE person totally blind you to the obvious faults of the alternatives.

Well I don't think either are electable but someone needs to do a huge repair job. Corbyn is hell bent on destroying the Labour party as we know it, so one of the other two will have to try and start the repairs. It literally is a case of anyone but Corbyn now IF people want the Labour party to still exist and still form an opposition.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye. Re: The Politics Thread
It'd certainly be near impossible to be as bad as Corbyn. Read a couple of accounts from former shadow ministers about how he would constantly undermine them through action, inaction or bad timing. When you spend all your time on the backbenches I guess you don't get much practice at it. The others would at least get those fundamental things sorted out. They'd also be more willing to step aside if they aren't polling well ahead of the next general election.BWFC_Insane wrote:Well I don't think either are electable but someone needs to do a huge repair job. Well the coup hit a hotel half a mile away from where the President was staying.Worthy4England wrote:It certainly seems to have been fairly amateurish...what's your theory?
The Turkish government forces seemed well prepared in the midst of chaos to respond to events, example just how the hell did they know so quickly just who's side what aircraft was on?
Why according to the government did they launch 11 bombs from F-16'S on a nearly empty Parliament building?
How come no major government officials got targeted?
Why did the soldiers allow civilians to 'get in their face'?
In nearly all armed military coups I've ever read about confronting the troops is usually suicide.
Strange how less than 24hrs after the event the government has a list of 'coup' supporters and is actively rounding them up, why no action before if they knew about this 'coup'?
It could be an amateur attempt but they have past experience in this type of action.
Just a thought, maybe, someone who said they would neither forgive or forget prompted a little mischief even?

I have to say some of the aftermath has felt a little "staged" to put it mildly.Hoboh wrote:Well the coup hit a hotel half a mile away from where the President was staying.Worthy4England wrote:It certainly seems to have been fairly amateurish...what's your theory?

It could just have been a very bad attempt though....

On this occasion, the military are pro-people and I assume, see the public as their.. well, their public.
Shooting them wouldn't exactly garner support.
It's a shame it didn't materialise because the military's approach in Turkey is apparently to keep hold of their historical secular approach to their democracy. Their latest government, not so much.
Turkey are called a democracy, because they hold general elections, but caling them Turkey a democracy because they have elections, is like calling Red Bull a health drink, because it has water in it

Come on "feminism has gone too far" - I can get a full house here!
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Re: The Politics Thread
Inventor of the ATM machine and PIN number died the other day.
May he RIP in peace.
I've been fairly impressed with Owen Smith in what I've seen so far (until that interview which I haven't seen yet). Hadn't heard of him two weeks ago, but he looks proper.
Eagle I actually quite like, but don't think she has it leadership wise. So I'm hoping it's Smith v Corbyn. They're whittling down to one challenger by tomorrow apparently.
Corbs the fav but I'm not sure it's as clear cut as some make out.

damn that loony lefty idea of members being able to vote!
Re: The Politics Thread
He was 56 and 57% the other day. Against two people not many had heard of two months ago. It isn't going to be a coronation this time and he is dreadful, dreadful, when pressured.
Still big favourite, but not impossible. Still lots more stories like this:
http://www.liliangreenwood.co.uk/lilian ... ty_members" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And Thangam Debbonaire to come out.
That link is ridiculous btw

(plus - as I said before - she seems to have one nostril massively bigger than the other - which obv. means she is not to be trusted! Also - her camp appears to have been fabricating stories of homophobic abuse directed at her by "corbynistas" at a meeting that it turns out she wasn't even at... Despite the promises, this fight isn't going to be nice - not even between the ones who say they agree!
