It's telling that people who fundamentally disagree with Theresa May have a begrudging respect for her, and the people who fundamentally agree with Jeremy Corbyn just think he's completely shit.thebish wrote:as is Eagles...Prufrock wrote:He was 56 and 57% the other day. (plus - as I said before - she seems to have one nostril massively bigger than the other - which obv. means she is not to be trusted! Also - her camp appears to have been fabricating stories of homophobic abuse directed at her by "corbynistas" at a meeting that it turns out she wasn't even at... Despite the promises, this fight isn't going to be nice - not even between the ones who say they agree!)

aye... politics is not about ideas/policies anymore (if it ever was) - it's about something altogether shallower and more vacuous...Beefheart wrote:It's telling that people who fundamentally disagree with Theresa May have a begrudging respect for her, and the people who fundamentally agree with Jeremy Corbyn just think he's completely shit.thebish wrote:as is Eagles...Prufrock wrote:He was 56 and 57% the other day. Re: The Politics Thread
Of course it's about ideas and policies.
It's not about ideologies anymore, but thank f*ck for that!
Eagle I've not seen under pressure. Corbyn gets short and visibly annoyed. Won't play well IMO. Apart from among his cult, of course.

I'm not so sure it is... eagles doesn't disagree with corbyn hardly at all... neither does the other chap.Prufrock wrote:Of course it's about ideas and policies.
(though maybe I was hasty - seeing you declare so boldly that it is NOT about ideologies clangs a bell in my mind... that's exactly what the Osbourne austerity project was about - hard-line ideology...)
Re: The Politics Thread
My bad, I thought you meant politics generally.
There are some differences but not loads, agreed. But that's fine, in a party. You want a programme that's largely backed by most MPs most of the time. You also want someone who can organise the party to best implement that programme. On no planet in any universe is Corbyn that person.

It was more a point about their respective levels of competence having read accounts on how they each operate.thebish wrote:aye... politics is not about ideas/policies anymore (if it ever was) - it's about something altogether shallower and more vacuous...Beefheart wrote:It's telling that people who fundamentally disagree with Theresa May have a begrudging respect for her, and the people who fundamentally agree with Jeremy Corbyn just think he's completely shit.thebish wrote:as is Eagles...Prufrock wrote:He was 56 and 57% the other day. I wouldn't disagree that politics is increasingly shallow and vacuous though.

Letting people join for £3 and vote some of whom are doing so for destructive purposes is pretty loony.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Polling suggests Corbyn is way out in front of either amongst the membership...Prufrock wrote:Inventor of the ATM machine and PIN number died the other day.
May he RIP in peace.
I've been fairly impressed with Owen Smith in what I've seen so far (until that interview which I haven't seen yet). Hadn't heard of him two weeks ago, but he looks proper.
Eagle I actually quite like, but don't think she has it leadership wise. So I'm hoping it's Smith v Corbyn. They're whittling down to one challenger by tomorrow apparently.
Corbs the fav but I'm not sure it's as clear cut as some make out.
damn that loony lefty idea of members being able to vote!

^ not as loony as upgrading bloody trident! The only thing dafter was Tom Watson "it's more important than ever to keep trident now we're leaving the EU"

Re: The Politics Thread
I'm suspicious of anyone who thinks they definitely know one way or another with conviction on Trident.

If you could give me a scenario where anyone would actually use these kind of weapons without triggering MAD that doesn't involve an accident, then I'd gladly take you up on the discussion.Prufrock wrote:I'm suspicious of anyone who thinks they definitely know one way or another with conviction on Trident.
I know there's some reet closet lunatics on here, but the only conceivable real threat that would involve any country using the threat against our no threat to any kind of territorial advantage, without threat of another nuclear power getting involved, would be France. Like I say, there's some proper fringe lunatics who could conceive of that.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

^^ blimey. That's shocking. Name them. They deserve outing. Who is it that's simply itching to nuke France ????
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

So I need to give you a scenario when they might be used, any scenario, as long as it isn't the scenario in which they might be used?Lord Kangana wrote:If you could give me a scenario where anyone would actually use these kind of weapons without triggering MAD that doesn't involve an accident, then I'd gladly take you up on the discussion.Prufrock wrote:I'm suspicious of anyone who thinks they definitely know one way or another with conviction on Trident.

Don't get me wrong. I'd get rid of them (ideally, I'd scale them down at first but they looked into it and it's not really doable). I reckon America in particular having them means we probably don't, though the nearer Trump gets to the White House the less sure I'd be. Ideally, I'd have liked say, us France and Germany to pool together and have one lot between us, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
As I say, I'd come down on not renewing, but there are strong arguments for keeping. Anyone who claims they'd 100% get rid and it's lunacy not to is arguing from emotion and made their mind up before-hand. Imagine that. Bet they all support Corbyn or something!

Bet they don't!
I have no emotion for nuclear one way or another, indeed I'm a big fan of (sensibly used, obviously, or not to some) Nuclear energy.
Trident? Just a spectacular waste of money - a potential total of £100bn being bandied about? And we're worried about 27 countries chipping in £20bn collectively for research to advance us not destroy us!

Good. Sadly can't see anything other than a win for the mad old Tory assister. Least Smith can probably run a credible campaign and not seem like a loon. Well let's hope.Prufrock wrote:Anyway, Corbyn v Smith it is!

He seemed an almost ideal candidate at first glance, then I heard about his lobbying work for Pfizer and worry about what his position on the privatisation of the NHS really is.BWFC_Insane wrote:Good. it wasn't corbyn who made that change... it was the previous labour administration - you know - the good non-looney left one...BWFC_Insane wrote: Letting people join for £3 and vote some of whom are doing so for destructive purposes is pretty loony.
