Shouldn't be if they're kitted out in para-aramid.Athers wrote:Biker I know told me that the reason people get hurt is that generally they low side it (fall off on the inside when tilting) and hit kerbs, walls, other cars etc. On a track there's often no impact as they just slide along / roll and there's no collision. Might be burns and all that though.

when i did my bike test - the bike school specialised in showing a folder of pictures of bikers who had slid along on tarmac at a range of speeds without protective gear..
gloveless hands at 30mph on tarmac - not a pretty sight..
feet protected only by trainers on tarmac at 40mph - a mangled wreck...
legs that were just encased in jeans at 60mph - not much left...
yet still i see people riding in t-shirts and shorts with no gloves in the summer....

Some of us used to ride without helmets, socks or shoes. Luckily I never needed to attempt a breaking manoeuvre by the use of my little filthy pinkies.thebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Shouldn't be if they're kitted out in para-aramid.Athers wrote:Biker I know told me that the reason people get hurt is that generally they low side it (fall off on the inside when tilting) and hit kerbs, walls, other cars etc. On a track there's often no impact as they just slide along / roll and there's no collision. Not according to this chap. Blimey.Prufrock wrote:I quite enjoyed this from a cycling campaign group,

Found out today I'll be commuting for 3 hours a day from April to August. Had a lovely summer planned in my head and now I'll be spending 15 hours a week in my bloody car

Someone I know, who we all told to stop smoking and drinking, continued regardless and her child was born last week with all the signs and now has been whisked into hospital with a hole in its heart. I'm fuming.
On a related subject Monty, you probably have never heard of her but a woman in Glasgow has been arrested over the murder of her child called Mikaael (who had supposedly disappeared overnight in the manner of Madelaine McCann). The BBC have been following developments and had two pictures in the headlines of one of the update articles. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25817724 I was a bit puzzled at first about the second photo, until it dawned on me that the picture editor knows about FAS and was pointing out that this kid has the full range of symptoms (including the railroad ears, hence the side shot of his head). It would seem the abuse of this particular child started well before he was born.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
It's amazing any of us got out alive and near normal, don't you think ?
What, with all those factories, factory chimneys, lead in petrol, parents drinking and smoking before and after birth .... during probably. Unfettered perv's round every corner, murderers, malnutrition, grammar schools. Feet & feet of snow, ice on the inside of windows, private bonfires, playing with fireworks. Smacking, the cane at school, playing football in school-yards without kit, goals or coaches. Parks without soft-fall areas.
How did we manage to survive ?

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
It's not much to ask. To stop drinking during pregnancy. I asked my mother about this - this is not a modern 'fad', it was well known in the 50s. And the kid I'm talking about is neither 'near normal' nor at this moment likely to be alive next week...

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
this graph seems to suggest that child deaths from accidents has decreased significantly... not all of us managed to survive...
