Re: The athletics/running thread
Slowly
Have tailed off the running due to knee bother, but am enjoying the rowing machine without too much impact on the old joint - probably means I'm not doing it properly but I'm feeling the benefit of the regular exercise.
Still can't say no to a Carrs pastie every now and then, mind

If it hurts you're not doing it properly/ have an injury. Cross training is far better than a single discipline so cycling, swimming and running combine is a good core strengthener and great for all round fitness. If the pain persists see a physiotherapist. Will cost about £30 for a one hour session but a good physio's worth their weight in gold.
As for the Carr's pasties.... so do I!
The point is you can reward yourself after a good workout. Protein is brilliant after aerobic exercise because your metabolism is in overdrive so you break it down more easily.

Just ran 2.5 miles this evening but then sat here and ate a huge bar of Galaxy chocolate whilst waiting for hubby to cook dinner...

Re: The athletics/running thread
About what? Him 'cooking' dinner? When i say cook, i mean it in the loosest sense of the word, he's bunged some fishfingers in the oven... Anyway, i can't get up to help, the cats sat on my lap and needs a bit of love... Would be unfair of me to push him off..Wandering Willy wrote:I shall be having words with Mr GG.Gooner Girl wrote:Just ran 2.5 miles this evening but then sat here and ate a huge bar of Galaxy chocolate whilst waiting for hubby to cook dinner...

I quit smoking a couple of days ago. Will try some running when I think it won't involve me expiring.

Well done. What's the motivation? Are you using any products to help or are you going cold turkey?
Re: The athletics/running thread
I shit thee not!
Tried cold turkey, it doesn't work (is difficult) because most of cigarette addiction is mental. It's not physical withdrawal symptoms at all. The nicotine leaves your body almost completely in a matter of days. It's because you're still thinking about them weeks/months later that you go back to smoking. The book basically debunks why it is that the mental addiction is so strong and how to break it. Understanding your enemy will help you destroy him.
The motivation is simply to get my fitness back. I love running and used to be bloody good at it before I discovered booze and smokes.

It worked for me, and that was seven years ago now. Fat as a bastard now, like!Jakerbeef wrote: Tried cold turkey, it doesn't work

Sorry. I meant it didn't work for me, cos I'm a weak-willed sod who needs a book to tell him what to do.
Plus it's tough not to light-up when having a pint. The Achilles Heel.

I picked up Allan Carr's book when I gave up smoking. I read ''you are not an ex-smoker, you are a non-smoker'' Fair enough, says I and put the book back down.
Keep telling yourself that and you'll start to believe it. If, like me you are an habitual smoker, change your routine.
The beer thing (indoors) is hard, as is the ciggie after a meal, but just persevere, it gets better.
I gave up six years ago now, left it a year and then started running.
I honestly couldn't go back now.
Re: The athletics/running thread
You waited a whole year before running again
I was hoping to give it a go in a few weeks.

No reason why you can't. Just take it gently to begin with.Jakerbeef wrote:You waited a whole year before running again

And with the first brew, and after something to eat, and as soon as you get in the car.Jakerbeef wrote: Plus it's tough not to light-up when having a pint. The Achilles Heel.
Let the moment pass, and it will pass. Tough thing is though - the moments come thick and fast early on. You'll even dream about smoking, but honestly, it does get easier - much easier. Especially when your smell and taste come back to you (which you hadn't realised that you'd lost).
Just so you know, I actually started smoking when I was 11. I stopped at 38 smoking about 30-a-day.
If I can be of any help whatsoever then let me know.
I'd wish you good luck, but luck doesn't play a part in this. I do wish you strength however.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Can we expand this to a gym thread? Thanx
Started doing boxfit recently which is excellent...essentially a mix of aerobics, technique, pad work and conditioning. Tonight's was VERY aerobic and pad orientated and felt great afterwards so thought, why the hell not? I'll stay for the class afterwards. It was called 20, 20, 20...meaning 20mins aerobic, 20mins conditioning and 20mins core-work.
i now want to die. The aerobics was fine but the condition and core-work was brutal. Getting fitter but that made me realise i have no ab or pectoral strength whatsoever!

Cheers for the support folks. Still 'clean' so far, though I've being gorging on junk food I can tell you.
It's all about the core. Apparently most strength comes from there and building up 'show' muscles is no good unless core-work is done too. If I ever go to the gym it'll be for something like this cos weightlifting bores me to tears.Verbal wrote:The aerobics was fine but the condition and core-work was brutal. Good on you jaker...tried quitting a couple of months ago, lapsed after a week...really, really need to stop. Would make gym and football a lot easier, anyway.Jakerbeef wrote:Cheers for the support folks. Still 'clean' so far, though I've being gorging on junk food I can tell you.

Yeah, trainer said that same about core work...just something I'll have to keep working at. Not exactly like I need a gym to do it, either.
