One of my grandparents once told me of a time when people would have all their teeth pulled out as a 21st Birthday present so they didn't have a lifetime of hassle with them. I think I got a watch.
I've got that joy to look forward to next week. 2 wisdom teeth are impacted and piling the pressure on my other gnashers. I'm due in next week. Sacred about the pain and terrified of the cost
You have my commiserations, Harry. There's no pain, it's just deeply unpleasant. If they offer to do it under sedation, grab it with both hands. :(

last summer I had a tooth crack in half - weakened by old filled rugby injury - obviously - filling fell out leaving exposed nerve...

so - went to emergency dentist wherever it was we were (cornwall somewhere) and she inflicted massive pain by doing some amateur root canal stuff - then put a temp filling in along with some dangerous chemical that (she said) would kill whatever was left of the nerve after her ham-fisted attempts to kill me earlier on...

anyway - time passed - temp filling fell out - but no pain - so ignored it - but now it hurts like feck (so the nerve wasn't killed!) and am not even signed up for a dentist yet... but - for some utterly stupid unknown reason - I haven't done anything about it...

i'm stupid!

Always go private for a root canal treatment. NHS dentists are not paid sufficiently to carry out the procedure (which normally is far longer than they are allocated funds for) and therefore either make a mess of it or don't complete it. Also they tend to not have the requisite equipment to do a good job.

I had one on the NHS a while back and had no end of problems. The private one I subsequently got done has been solid ever since.

Can still get the crown fitted on the NHS if you have a private root canal.

Get that seen to pronto Bish before it becomes an abscess because if you think it hurts now, you're probably going to need to times that by 1000 if it becomes abscessed.

There are some words that are plain wrong. Adjectivisation is one thing: an abscessed tooth, but adverbalization is another: to become abscessed. No no no no no... stop.

I had root canal on the NHS in Essex - no pain - no problems - it was ace!

I'd advocate that the NHS funding model for dentists is completely changed.

However, in the absence of that I choose the best way of avoiding toothache. And my dentist has explained why it is very hard to get a good root canal job on the NHS now.

This won't be much comfort to Bruce or Harry. I had a lot of fillings as an adolescent then no trouble for some 25 years. Then things happen. Fillings need to be replaced and teeth break when you bite something hard. This means crowns. Root canals have some frequency. Then you think you are about done - nothing left to do. But after another 20-25 years crowns start breaking as they've reached their sell by date. I've had one crown replaced by a gold crown (guaranteed to last my lifetime) and have to have another gold one next month. These are at the back so they can use gold which is cheaper than porcelain. Apparently the labour costs for a porcelain crown is much higher than gold. So for some of us dental work is never over. None of my kids have fillings because of fluoride treatments unavailable to me. Perhaps they will be luckier.

I've had problems with my teeth since the age of 10, when I was tripped playing football in the playground. I didn't have time to put out my arms and broke both my upper front teeth. The dentist said that I was too old for a crown and I ended up walking around for 2-3 years with broken front teeth. Quite the looker, I can tell you! I then had regular gum infections and had to suck the crap out through a whole drilled in the back of one of the teeth. Nice!

Having had little work done over the last 15 years, I now have receding gums due to over brushing. As a result I have just gone back to using an electric toothbrush on the advice of my current dentist. Fingers crossed that this will stop/delay the recession.

My Dad had all of his teeth pulled out in his early 20's. Never got to the bottom of why, but apparently it wasn't unusual back then.

I've had my share of teeth problems, but nothing on the scale that others mentioned above.

The biggest hassle I have nowadays is the result of 4 teeth being removed in my mid-late teens, followed by being fitted with a brace to pull my front teeth back as I had an overbite bigger than Bugs Bunnie's. As I age, my teeth continue to move around my gums at will. The result being that food now gets stuck in all sorts of crevices that weren't there a few years ago. Not much of an inconvenience granted, but still annoying.

I've often wondered if this is just me, or if anyone else's teeth have a mind of their own?
Hope is what keeps us going.

I had four molars pulled as a teenager to make room for wisdom teeth so they wouldn't impact. I had a brace before and after that for the Bugs B overbite. My kids all wore appliances too but no removals. However, unlike you AH they don't seem to move around - break, fall out etc. but not move around.

I had a couple of fillings in England when I was about 9 or 10. Perhaps it's a genetic thing (I can't remember either of my parents without their choppers) or just a result of the restricted diet during the rationing period.

After arriving in Australia another problem raised its head. The local drill operator prescribed a root canal jobbie. "Rightio" said my loving parents. At the appointed time I attended his 'rooms' and underwent the aforesaid procedure - without anaesthetic. I have never, before or since, experienced such excruciating pain!

Five or six years later my wisdom teeth began the common impacting movements. This was also painful (but nothing like the above) in its symptoms. A visit to a Macquarie Street specialist sorted out that quick smart. One visit and they were all out. Local anaesthetic only. Brilliant. Mind you the feeling of a hammer and cold chisel being used wasn't all that reassuring at the time. Much later in life I came across a local dentist who was nothing short of magic. I quickly became so confident in his skills that I'd happily decline The Needle.

Unfortunately that talented man overstepped the mark and was prosecuted for fraud; he was, apparently, putting in claims to patient's insurance companies for work that he had not done. I have no idea as to why and am just as ignorant of the result of the investigation.
