Re: What are you reading tonight?
I'm currently reading a book by George Griffith - the title doesn't matter as it's hardly a literary masterpiece - which is partly set in Bolton/Farnworth and makes reference to proper road names and Trinity St. station (it even has an address on the Manny Road included). It could well be different for some of you, but it's rare that I've found a fictional piece containing locations with which I am, even partly, familiar.

Re: What are you reading tonight?
Went to Bolton main library today and picked up a couple of books, tech stuff on Rosslyn Chapel, Grail Legends etc, from personal interest, and a couple of novels. Absolutely delighted to find a copy of Simon Marland's Bolton Wanderers FC, The Official History 1877-2002. Probably had an update, don't know, but it's a brilliant collection of facts, pics and memory joggers. Well chuffed.

Tom Sharpe, Indecent Exposure............. for about the 15th time. Still makes me laugh out loud.

Sod it. Sold to the bloke with a pile of at least 25 unread books. Thanks for the heads-up, Bob. Read the reviews and they all pretty much match yours, so have ordered it up.Bijou Bob wrote:Tom Sharpe, Indecent Exposure............. for about the 15th time. Still makes me laugh out loud.

The South African farces are his best work IMO, Riotous Assembly is also a great read as are the Wilt trilogy.

I can remember reading these many years ago. Was quite strange really, I'd go half a book without so much as a smirk, then a couple of pages would have me pi$$ing myself laughing. I think I recall Riotous Assembly being one of the better efforts.Bijou Bob wrote:The South African farces are his best work IMO, Riotous Assembly is also a great read as are the Wilt trilogy.

Both are brilliant if you remember the absurdities of apartheid. Sharpe was expelled from South Africa for his anti-apartheid work. I never felt any of the Wilt series came anywhere near (though I kept reading them). The exploding ostriches chapter is, i think, the funniest thing I've ever read.

A colleague has just lent me My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. I'm getting the impression that this could be resonably hard work (non linear narrative) but ultimately rewarding. We shall see.

My partner is a huge fan - has read all his novels and just got a collection of his essays, journalism and short fiction.Bruce Rioja wrote:A colleague has just lent me My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. I found him a really difficult read, hard to get into...
Must try again...

I don't often give up on a book - but I did on this one... I decided life was too short! but... if you get through it, I will try again!Bruce Rioja wrote:A colleague has just lent me My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. and as we have just signed Tuncay - maybe it is an appropriate read.... you could tweet him for plot-explanations...

Re: What are you reading tonight?
I'm preparing for twelve days in Portugal. And selecting the reading. Not easy. Shelf of Shame still has far too many for a mere twelve days... And some are definitely not holiday reading... Currently David Mitchell's number9dream and Andrea Levy's The Long Song the only certs.
Recommendations welcomed - don't do pulp fiction - would really welcome page turners with a little thought behind them...

Re: What are you reading tonight?
I've been reading Niall Ferguson's The War of The World for the past few days.
It is very good. Though he can be a bit controversial, an argumentative bastard and just sometimes plain wrong (he's an economic historian, see), but if nothing else his stuff is always incredibly thought provoking.
And for that I take my hat off.
Another one of his books I'd highly recommend. The Thatcherite nice person that he is.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Half way through Lolita by Nabukov.
Got Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Freedom, the Individual and the Law and The Case of the Pope by Geoffrey Robertson; and Chekhov's The Comic Stories lined up.

Don't know if you've read it Will, but last year on hols I realy enjoyed 'The Time Traveller's Wife' Some lovely prose which I think you'd appreciate. It's a little overlong, but very well written.

Re: What are you reading tonight?
Thank you for that - I've been tempted by that for a good while - but not previously had a recco from a reader... I've now added Paul Torday's Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (great title) and a. m. holmes' this book will save your life to the holiday pile...Il Pirate wrote:William the White wrote:I'm preparing for twelve days in Portugal.
