guilty as charged! :D

(though I don't see how being a good mum and working hard would anger Mr GG!)

except you said it wasn't the presents (that would cause Mr GG displeasure) - but what she'd have to do to get them!!

Probably easily googleable question but I'll ask if you know much else...what stores would sell 5 amp copper fuse wire?

Any hardware shop worth its salt. Bought my last lot from an independent place in Westhoughton but Wickes, B&Q, anywhere like that should have it in abundance

Cheers. I see there's a maplins near work and apparently they stock it, so will trundle over in a few minutes or so.

That's a fairly low rating, mrkint, what's it for? A lighting circuit? If it is, why did it 'pop'? It's a genuine query, sir. I haven't used fuses for years; my fuse box is chock-a-block with circuit breakers and ECBs and I can assure you that it's a lot easier to throw a switch than muck around removing the old fuse wire from and rewiring the holder - particularly when doing it in the dark. :)

Indeed it is, Dujon. We had a leak through the roof last Friday, and my guess is that it shorted the circuit and blew the fuse.

I did think when we looked that the idea of fuse wire was old! Tbf it wasn't too bad - the mains was still going so we had lamps and things, so putting in the new fuse wire wasn't a problem. Just glad that nothing blew up in the process, and that (fingers crossed) the problem was easily rectifiable and wasn't something a lot worse.

It suggests to me that the whole place needs a re-wire Kinty? I think the RCB type box are mandatory when fitting new now and they have been for ten years or more? If you're replacing wire, the box must be ancient!

,,,, because of things like water leaks dripping straight onto live electrics being viewed as, somehow, "a bad thing".
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Yes, BB, it's the same here. They are a terrific safety item. Here they have to trip within < 3 milliseconds of detecting an imbalance between the in and out currents. Of course they are not a fuse or straight out overload circuit breaker but the two in tandem make for a pretty decent protection. Naturally, if either trips then there's a reason and that needs to be investigated. I'm sure that mrkint will have a sparky check out his situation.
