I believe part of the problem with quitting is the psychosomatic element attached to it. It is without doubt an incredibly addictive habit, but the constant psychological reinforcement that "you'll turn to them under stressful situations" is an intrinsic part of the problem. This is further reinforced by adverts for quitting products.

I've quit several times (!! thefuckingirony!!), but the best aide was Alan Carr's Best Way. Its not a cure-all however, but (in very short summation) it helps you to shift your psychological relationship with cigarettes. It took me the best part of a decade to really fully absorb in my mind what the book had actually said.

I stopped smoking 18 months ago, because to be frank I was just fed up of smoking.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Yep - the absolute key... so fed up that I quit 24 hours before my quit date... It was piss easy...

Every other time was like torture from about ten minutes after quitting to the moment, three days later when I bought just ten...

Want it - you'll quit and it won't even be hard... going on 13 years now...

TFFT!

Whenever I tried to set quit dates and use patches etc I didn't get very far. One day I just said to myself that's it. That was 3 and a half years ago and I haven't looked back. It wasn't easy as such, but far easier than previous attempts. I'm of the belief that if you really, truly, 100% want to give up then you will and without too much anguish. Otherwise, you'll be back on them soon enough.

Good luck Tango. You've done the worst bit, so keep going...

Not quite the word I would use.

Good luck mrkint. I hope you make it back in one piece and the tomatoes don't stain too much.

Was on holiday a bit back and really enjoyed the daily games of beach volleyball, so i thought i might try and find a volleyball club in London I could maybe go along to for summat to do while im down here.

There are quite a few but i heard about a practice session at one on Tottenham Court Road last night - i might have guessed when i found out it was at the YMCA but i ended up having a 2hr session with the London all gay volleyball team!

Add to that i thought i was alright at it before i got there, but they are all shit-hot and I got frickin pasted.

still, an experience i suppose...

Went along to the gig last night. Hung around for half hour with the other acts looking to sign up...then get told the bugger's been cancelled!

Honestly, it's true. It is!

Anyway, went along to another open mic in Liverpool street - didn't perform as didn't get there til late. Made me a bit calmer about the whole thing. Not many people get tons of laughs and no one really cares if you bomb on stage. There were some funny feckers there though, as well as some, er, racists. :/

Next wednesday I'm definitely performing though. I'm on a list and everything.

There are jokes about 'limp wrists' and the like .... but they'd be inappropriate I guess.

A great sport though. If you follow up when you return to the Bolton area my cousin manages the Salford Ladies team (no, stop it) and has a broad number of contacts in the sport. Drop me a line.

He didn't mention the showers afterwards - hope he didn't drop the soap.

Had a meeting with a guy from Seoul this morning who described a female colleague of mine as 'smut ready'. I was a little taken aback by this. It was only later that it dawned on me that he was actually describing her as being (a) smart lady.

My boss at work had a phone call from her 14 year old son last night that went:

Son "Er, I think Im in trouble but don't tell dad"

Mum "That'd be hard seeing as I'm on speakerphone and he's sat at the side of me. What've you done"?

Son "Well, er, I was erm, looking at this adult site........... by accident........ and the next thing I know, it had taken a picture of me on the webcam and came up with a Police charge sheet with a picture of me on it. It says the Metropolitan Police are coming round and that I have to pay 80 pounds as a fine for accessing porn"

By this time, the poor lad was in tears and his dad had to pull the car up he was laughing so hard (I'm unsure about where I stand morally on the laughing thing atm).

So, a warning to us all, be careful what you ahem, 'accidentally' access and watch out for a rather good scam.

My mrs used to smoke a bit and she said one thing that is addictive is taking the time out breath deeply, which we actually don't do enough and she later realised she could get the calming effect of doign this without involving a cigarette.

They haven't explained that mobile phone footage very well - the pavement has already exploded. If you look carefully you can see the shattered pavement slabs and black sooty marks around the hole. The bloke standing near it has already had a close encounter of the first kind and is phoning up the coppers to report it, and the person filming it had heard the first explosion, when the second (much milder) explosion occurred - which is the explosion shown on the footage.
