Have to say, even for someone that watches this almost as a layman - what a superb game of Rugby League that was. An absolute joy to watch.thebish wrote:proper rugby!!jimbo wrote:Old Trafford.

Just got back, a few too many mullets and too many renditions of Marching On Together for my liking, but it was a great game. Old schoolmate of a good friend of mine Rob Burrow running the show, the little sod.Bruce Rioja wrote:Have to say, even for someone that watches this almost as a layman - what a superb game of Rugby League that was. One of the best things I've seen. Funny, moving, powerful. Bleak, uplifting, tender.Bruce Rioja wrote:I'm intrigued.William the White wrote:Royal Exchange Theatre.

Five actors play about 20 characters, in a story set in The Golden Dragon, a Chinese-Thai-Vietnamese restaurant and its surroundings, with legal and illegal immigrants cooking and serving, and customers from the grisly to the delightful. Somewhere in central Europe. It's almost filmic in the way it cuts from one scene to the next (there are 48 'scenes' in a 75 minute play), and the threads of story are picked up, dropped, returned to, taken forward, repeated... A mixture of narration and action, minimum props.
Acting excellent.
I want to see this play again and have just emailed the company to order the script. It was the last night in Manchester (it's a touring show and was in the Royal Ex studio). Don't know where it goes next.
BTW - did you get to Virginia Woolf, Bruce? what did you think.

To add to my post - above - on The Golden Dragon...
This review from the Telegraph has it pretty spot on... (how rarely do I feel that about the Telegraph!)
This is an excellent piece of theatre...

Indeed it was a great game. Saldy though that's 5 GF defeats on the spin now. Thought we had a great chance yesterday, just possibly one step too far for the kids though. Felt genuinely sorry for them at the end, but they've got a top future ahead of them and it'll be them winning the grand finals one day! Looking forward to catching the highlights on the BBC later. Being at the game you get a bit sucked in to appreciate it as a spectacle sometimes.P.O.S. wrote:Just got back, a few too many mullets and too many renditions of Marching On Together for my liking, but it was a great game. I'm not, to say the least, a rugby follower.
But that was a fantastically exciting game. Loved it. Shocked myself.

Case of "gone" rather than going.
Saw Dylan at the MEN last night. Top stuff.
Missed Knopfler though, as I was late! Oops!

Enjoy! He certainly revisited 60s Dylan, loud, very loud and very brash!Il Pirate wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Case of "gone" rather than going.

Don't expect to be able to recognise anything until he's at least a minute through the song though, as usual he changes the rhythm and tune completely. Only now he's started barking the lyrics out, and rolling 6 words into one! A number of the less enthusiastic fans walked out well before the end! Still brilliant though, but not for the casual fan!
